The latest Windows update failed. I followed the updates manually and it asked me to restart. On restart, I get the initial boot screen, then I get a black screen.
I can't find out how to launch into safe mode, so right now I have a completely bricked laptop

I've launched into recovery mode and tried the start-up repair. This failed.
I'm now trying to back up data - but if I can avoid a system restore/recovery that would need good.
Unfortunately, the file back-up interface isn't working either - it keeps reverting back to the previous screen.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.
- What happens when you start the computer?
- Does computer boot into windows desktop?
While you respond to that, let's try these steps:
Turn on your computer and repeatedly press the esc key until the Startup Menu opens. Begin a System Recovery by pressing F11, then use the following steps to open Windows in Safe Mode. If prompted, select your keyboard layout, then from the Choose an option screen, click Troubleshoot.
-
Click Advanced options.
-
Click Startup Settings. If the Startup Settings option does not display, follow the steps in the section Entering Safe Mode without access to Startup Settings.
-
Click Restart.
-
The computer restarts, and another Startup Settings screen opens showing a list of different startup options.
-
Choose the Safe Mode option you want from the Startup Settings menu:
-
Press the F4 key for Enable Safe Mode. Safe Mode starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and services.
-
Press the F5 key for Enable Safe Mode with Networking. Safe Mode with Networking starts Windows in Safe Mode and allows access to the Internet and your network.
-
Press the F6 key for Enable Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Safe Mode with Command Prompt starts Windows in Safe Mode with a Command Prompt window. Typically, only IT professionals use this mode.
-
If prompted, select your keyboard language type and sign in with an account name that has administrator rights.
NOTE: You need to enter your Windows account name and password to log on in Safe Mode. You cannot log in using another method, such as a Personal Identification Number (PIN) or a fingerprint reader.
The computer opens the desktop in Safe Mode.
-
When finished troubleshooting, exit Safe Mode by clicking Start.
-
Click Power, then select Restart.
The computer starts normally.
-
Note: System Restore returns your computer to the files and settings from the restore point. Your personal files and documents are not affected.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

hi - thanks for the message. I managed to launch into recovery mode and back-up files manually (I couldn't select the whole documents folder: but I was able to back-up each folder). Then in the recovery mode, I tried the repair option - that didn't work. So instead, I rolled back to a previous restore point. I believe the problem was caused by the .NET 4.8 framework for Windows 10 1803. That hasn't updated, but is installing now. I'll post again once this has installed and let you know if it's worked or if I've had to restore again.
EDIT:
The .NET update seems to have worked - and I'm pretty sure that was the update that previously failed. The next trick is to install the windows 1903 - which I'll back-up before I do. I know other people have had trouble with this one!
