Hi, lately my HP notebook has been very sluggish every time I turn it on; I can hear the hard drive busily whirring away and it would take some time for it to calm down. Opened browser like Chrome and/or Word hanging on saying not responding. My initial Ram was 4 Gb and I have doubled that with virtual Ram to see if that would help. It did initially but I'm back to the same situation. What can I do to improve the response?

Thanks.

@YQMenk Note: Please ensure the complete product name/number for a quicker response from the community, as we need to know what we are dealing with to provide an accurate solution: Click here for steps on finding the information we need!

Meanwhile, here's a few things you need to do, to resolve this issue once and for all:

  • Disable all firewalls and antivirus programs including windows ten's own firewalls and antivirus programs.
  • try safe mode with networking to check if the Internet connection is fast there. Try both wired and wireless options.
  • Link for safe mode with networking is given in my earlier post. Please try that.
  • Uninstall the existing network adapters and update the bios chipset and network adapters (both wired and wireless) from this link : click here to find and install the same
  • Please try to change the router's broadcasting channel to another value. try different working channels. that might help for WiFi only.
  • Try performing a clean boot in windows 10 using this link: Click here for steps
  • Try this link fixing network connections in windows 10: Click here

Hi RD

The list of steps you've suggested did not help. I have also done  Performance Tune-up Check: System File Checker, clear browser history, deleting temp files, deleting prefetch files. I still have about half TB of space, few partitions not maxed out. Nothing worked.

No improvement at all even though the workload on my Laptop 14s is basically on Word along with either Chrome or MS Edge with about 10 Taps. I have even added another 4 GB of virtual RAM to the existing one,

So, please advice what else I should do to get back some working speed of laptop. Thanks.

@YQMenk Let's run a hardware test to ensure this isn't a hardware failure,

Please install the latest version of the HP Hardware diagnostics (UEFI) on your device using this link: Click here for details

  • Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  • Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
  • On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.
  • Click Extensive Test.
  • Click Run once, or Loop until error.
  • While the test ils running, the time remaining and test result for each component display on the screen.

If a component fails a test, write down the failure ID (24-digit code) for when you respond back to us.

If you wish to thank me for my efforts, you could click on "Accept as solution" on my post as the solution should help others too.
