@Stefzbb232, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error you're seeing KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED with storport.sys typically points to a problem with your laptop’s storage controller drivers or disk subsystem. Here's how you can resolve it:

Boot into Recovery Mode

If your laptop keeps restarting:

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Power it on and force shutdown as soon as the Windows logo appears.
  • Repeat this 3 times to trigger Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).

Run Startup Repair

  • In WinRE:
Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Repair

Boot into Safe Mode

  • In WinRE:
Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart
  • Press F4 or F5 to enter Safe Mode.

Uninstall Problematic Drivers

  • In Safe Mode:
    • Open Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager)
    • Expand Storage Controllers
    • Right-click and uninstall any third-party or suspicious drivers
    • Reboot normally

Run System File Checker

  • Open Command Prompt in Safe Mode or WinRE:

sfc /scannow

chkdsk /f /r

Update BIOS and Drivers

  • Visit HP Support: Official HP® Support
  • Enter your laptop model and download:
    • Latest BIOS
    • Latest Storage/Chipset drivers

Reset Windows (if needed)

If nothing works:

  • In WinRE:
Troubleshoot > Reset this PC > Keep my files

This error typically relates to storage drivers or disk controller issues, and can prevent Windows from booting properly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi again,I actually got to that place, reinstall etc, save personal files I picked which to save, and it either freezes up during scanning or BSOD comes on again. These are all the error codes it cycles through when the bsod is on

Stop codes

System service exception  0xc000021a

Driver overran stack buffer

IRQL not less or equal

Page fault in non-paged area

   fbwf.sys

KERNEL security check failure

KMODE exception not handled

Failed storport sys

@Stefzbb232, Thanks for the update, that’s very helpful. Since you're seeing multiple BSOD stop codes cycling during boot and even during recovery attempts, this points to a deeper system-level corruption, possibly involving:

  • Critical system files
  • Storage drivers
  • File system integrity
  • RAM or SSD issues

Here’s a comprehensive recovery plan tailored to your situation:

Advanced Recovery Steps for Multiple BSODs

Perform Hardware Diagnostics (Outside Windows)

Use HP's built-in diagnostics:

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Power it on and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Run:
    • System Test
    • Memory Test
    • Storage Test

Create HP Cloud Recovery USB (Fresh Windows Install)

Since Windows Reset is failing, use HP’s official recovery tool:

HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows 11 and 10 | HP® Support

Steps:

  1. On another working PC, download the HP Cloud Recovery Tool.
  2. Insert a 16GB+ USB drive.
  3. Run the tool and enter your laptop’s serial number.
  4. Create the recovery USB.
  5. Boot your laptop from the USB (press Esc > Boot Menu > select USB).
  6. Choose Clean Install (not reset) and let it format and reinstall Windows.

Optional: Use Windows Media Creation Tool

If HP Recovery fails:

  • Use Windows 11 Media Creation Tool
  • Create bootable USB
  • Boot and choose Custom Install
  • Delete all partitions and install fresh

Check for SSD or RAM Faults

If BSODs persist even after clean install:

  • SSD may be failing (especially if storport.sys and fbwf.sys errors appear)
  • RAM may be unstable (especially with IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE)

You can:

  • Swap SSD temporarily if you have a spare
  • Test RAM using MemTest86

I hope this helps!

So Ii already went through all of the HP diagnostics, even left it in the loop for a while. it showed no errors. Everything looked great. I’m able to do the other thing you suggested, but we’re trying to save her personal files. Do you think there’s a way to do that? by the way I really appreciate your help!

Also every time I start it opens with HP preparing automatic repair and an error code start popping up the above. My main worry is getting her files off of the computer. Is there a way to take the hard drive in and retrieve them somehow?
