OMEN Laptop - 15t-dh100 CTO

Since I bought it a few years ago, the system throttles down to 0.79 ghz when under pressure for some time.

I can delay this by doing following, but it never goes away:

* I can delay throttling by changing Fan Speed to Max and switch performance to "Default" from Omen Gaming Hub

* I can delay throttling by cleaning my fan and vents
* I can pull down the graphic details of a game

But sooner or later it always happens.
I've confirmed with Intel XTU, it is happening due to overheating.

Shouldn't the system auto adjust to avoid going to 0.79 Ghz? The system is hardly usable and I've to sleep/shut down to cool it down to come back to normal.

Is this usual with all Omen users? Is there a workaround?

p.s:

I believe it happens only when both CPU and GPU are under load. CPU only load does throttle the CPU down for a moment but that goes down to 3 Ghz or 2Ghz and comes back to normal. If things heat up for both CPU and GPU, the CPU goes down to 0.79 Ghz and takes a long time to come back, something like 7 or 8 minutes.

Hi @basitj,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP OMEN Laptop is experiencing thermal throttling, which is a common issue in many laptops, particularly gaming laptops or those with high-performance components packed into a compact space. Thermal throttling occurs when the system's components reach a certain temperature threshold, causing the CPU or GPU to reduce its clock speed to prevent overheating and potential damage.

While some level of thermal throttling is normal in laptops, extreme cases like yours, where the CPU clock speed drops significantly to 0.79 GHz, can severely impact performance and user experience.

Here are some steps you can take to mitigate thermal throttling.

  • Improve cooling: Ensure that your laptop's cooling system is functioning optimally. You've already mentioned cleaning the fans and vents, which is a good start. Consider using a laptop cooling pad to provide additional airflow to the underside of your laptop.
  • Adjust power settings: In addition to changing fan speed and performance settings through the Omen Gaming Hub, you can also adjust the power settings in Windows. Lowering the maximum processor state in the power plan settings can help reduce heat generation. However, this may come at the cost of performance.
  • Undervolting: Undervolting your CPU using software like Intel XTU or ThrottleStop can help reduce heat output and potentially mitigate thermal throttling. However, not all laptops support undervolting, and it may void your warranty, so proceed with caution.
  • Elevate the laptop: Placing your laptop on a flat, hard surface can help improve airflow and cooling efficiency. Avoid using your laptop on soft surfaces like beds or couches, as they can block airflow and exacerbate overheating.
  • Limit background processes: Close any unnecessary background processes or applications that may be running and consuming CPU or GPU resources, contributing to heat buildup.
  • Monitor temperatures: Use monitoring software like HWMonitor or Core Temp to keep an eye on your laptop's temperatures. This can help you identify when thermal throttling occurs and determine if further action is needed.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
