Compaq CQ61
Microsoft Windows Vista

Increasingly I find that my Compaq CQ61 is very  busy, with the fan on and the base hot, when I want to use it. How do I find out which program is running to cause this problem? so that I can somehow disable it and myself dictate what the computer is doing  rather than being at the mercy of random programs

Thank you for your help

In addition to seeing what is running in Task Manager, you should follow the instructions in this thread: HP Notebook PCs - Fan is Noisy and Spins Constantly, PC is Warmer than Normal | HP® Customer Support

Task manager will tell you what is using the CPU.

Thanks but unfortunately the usage is so high that I can't get into Task Manager until it eventually stops. I need another diagnosis. I've checked all the routine maintenance, Norton stuff etc and it's not them.
