My mother has a HP Stream 11. She was told to install the Fall Creators update by April 11, 2018 which freaked her out. However she could not do it herself due to only 2.9 GB free on the 32 GB disk space.

The only way I could do this was to delete the pending updates as reported by Settings --> Updates and Security.  And having a memory in the drive to complete the install (I have a 64 GB card, but I am sure a something smaller would work.)

There were many updates ready to be installed, and none of these were the Fall Creators update which was installed at C:\Windows10Upgrade.

So I put the machine in Airplane mode. Then deleted the updates directory content at C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download.

I deleted the contents in the directory. NOT the directory itself, just everything in it. I put it in airplane mode because Windows would immediately start downloading the updates once I deleted the directory contents.

Then I ran the Fall Creators app at C:\Windows10Upgrade\Windows10UpgraderApp.exe.

Once I past the message saying I had enough disk space, I turned Airplane mode off and it installed. And it took about 3 hours for the entire process.

During this process it said there was not enough memory to continue the update, and gave me the opportunity to choose the memory card to complete the installation.

Now a couple other things I did before I did the above that probably were not needed:

1) Deleted a few apps that I didn't need or could reinstall (Solitaire Collection, Microsoft Office Trial). This freed up probably about .5 GB

2) I moved the C:\Windosw10Upgrade to a pen drive. This saved about 24 MB.

Not a bunch but may be helpful if you're really close to the 8GB minimum you need. I ran the upgrade app from the pen drive.

HP needs to get Microsoft to disable updates for these laptops (good luck) because being forced to update them manually these laptops become useless every major Win 10 version upgrade.  You cannot go from 1703 to 1709.  You need 8 or more GB free.  Sure, I know how to download Win 10 onto a USB stick and manually update it by wiping out the whole thing but most users will not be able to do this.

HP needs to demand Microsoft stop with their forced upgrades.  I stopped my computers from updating to 1709 by putting in a fake WSUS server into the registry however once on 1709 that trick doesn't seem to work anymore (and once it tries to update to 1709 the update assistant will override the registry tweaks.  I found that running a Powershell script every 30 seconds to stop and turn off Windows update works also but who is going to program that for everyone?  🙂

This is Microsofts fault, and partially HP's fault.  Microsoft for forcing the updates on us.  HP for selling something so utterly cheap it's barely useable except to fill up landfills.

If you think I am being unreasonable look at the reviews on these....

I've fixed computers for 30+ years, I program ~35 languages.  HP normally makes ok laptops, these are just bad design.

Ultimately Microsoft should not force people to upgrade to the next full OS build.  1709 has caused so many problems for so many people that it should not have been rolled out when it did.  If I want to run Windows 10 on a lightweight laptop I should be able to.  Forcing full OS updates is wrong.

At least you can always install Linux or something on these.  As for previous versions of Windows - most likely no drivers but I haven't tested that yet.

I know this is late to the party but I just pulled out my Stream 8 that has been in a box for a long time. It was running W10 1511 and I wanted to update it. Thanks to the info in this forum I loaded W10 1903 onto the 128GB SDXC via Windows media creation tool. The stream 8 storage was sitting at 21.7GB used out of 29.1GB available. Luckily during the update process the 1903 install gave the option of using the extra space on the SDXC  for the install process to go forward.

Used a similar process except I used the creation tool to create the update image on a USB flash drive using my Surface Pro 6 then moved that to a 128GB SDXC that I had place in the SP6 microSD slot. Then put the SDXC into my Stream 8 and the update process offered to use the extra space on the SD during the install process. Wish there was an easy way to up the Stream 8 storage from 32 to something more realistic for today.
