HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j000 Quad Edition Notebook PC series
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, I bought my laptop on 2013, and it was still windows 8, but now it's windows 10  and through the years it became really slow,

I would like to do a factory reset on my laptop by using the "HP Recovery Manager" but im afraid it will go back to windows 8 and as far as im concern there is no more free upgrade to windows 10.

My question is does any one of you know if i do a factory reset will it go back to windows 8 or stay at windows 10?

also could i still get a free upgrade to windows 10 if I revert back to windows 8?

Hi,

The recovery partition in hard drive might have got corrupted due to the upgrade from 8 to 10. So effectively factory reset isn't going to successfully complete.

If you've HP Recovery USB created after first setup of this notebook, you can use that to factory reset. This will take you back to factory installed OS i.e., Windows 8.

Since you've already upgraded and activated to Windows 10 previously, you can clean install (using Microsoft windows media creation tool) Windows 10 or 8/8.1 as you wish. Windows will be automatically activated upon installation while connected to internet (Microsoft servers).

Hi:

If you run the factory reset program, you will get W8 back.

Yes, you can get the free upgrade to W10 by clicking on the Update now button at the link below.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Since your PC was previously upgraded to W10, Microsoft has a record of that on its Windows activation server.

When you get to the part of the W10 installation script where you are asked to enter a product key, select the 'I don't have a product key' option (Skip), and W10 will install and automatically activate once you are reconnected to the internet.

You can also clean install W10 at any time by making your own plain W10 installation media using the media creation tool at the above link.

If you go that route, the HP recovery manager program will no longer work.
