Can not find admin user name and password for windows 11 on HP laptop

Hi @KD461,

If you can’t find the administrator username and password on a Windows 11 HP laptop, it usually means one of these situations applies. Here’s the clear, safe way to identify and recover access.

Windows does not show admin passwords anywhere (they’re encrypted). You must sign in or reset, not “find” the password.

There are 3 common account types:

Microsoft account (most common)

  • You sign in with an email address
  • Password is the Microsoft account password
  • Often used on newer HP laptops

Reset it online:

https://account.microsoft.com/password

Then connect the laptop to the internet and sign in.

Local administrator account

  • Username is not an email
  • Created during setup or by IT

Check existing admin usernames (if you can log in with any account):

  1. Press Win + X → Computer Management
  2. Go to Local Users and Groups → Users
  3. Look for accounts marked as Administrator

This only works if you’re already logged in.

Company / School laptop

  • Managed by IT (Azure AD / Intune)
  • You cannot reset admin access yourself

Contact your IT administrator or the company that issued the laptop.

If you are LOCKED OUT completely

Official recovery options

  • Microsoft account → reset password online (recommended)
  • Local account → you must reset Windows

Reset Windows (keeps files)

  1. On the login screen, click Power
  2. Hold Shift → click Restart
  3. Go to Troubleshoot → Reset this PC
  4. Choose Keep my files

This removes accounts & passwords but keeps personal data.
