HP Probook 6560b
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello all,

I am hoping someone can help me with my issue. Been looking around the forums for similar problems, but none of them helped.

The situation:

I have an old HP Probook 6560b, which I want to make use of again. It was missing a drive, so I decided to put an SSD in it.
I already found out that this model has some problems with SSD's. Mine can't detect the SSD in the BIOS when it is connected in the internal drive bay. Tried all kinds of suggestions, but none worked. (due to this I can't install Windows)

Someone suggested I should tune the SATA speed in the BIOS. But the option for SATA speed is not available.

So I thought let's start out with updating the bios. This hasn't been done in quite a few years, maybe this would help.

Since I don't have any OS installed on this model at the moment, I need to create a bootable USB to update the BIOS. (from another PC)

I followed the HP guide on how to update the bios (https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00131948/), as well as some guides other people made.

My issue:

All guides I found said the once you extract the executable, a window  "HP BIOS Update and Recovery" should open, where you can select what you want to do with the extracted files. This window does not open for me.

I tried 3 different PC's (one of them was a HP), but still no succes.

The window does not open, so I have no idea how I can make a bootable USB now.

I tried support, but since this model has aged they can't help me.

Does anybody have a suggestion I can try?

Thanks in advance!

Advice is like opinions -- everyone has something different -- so I will share mine with you.

SATA speed -- there is SATA 1, 2, and 3 -- different speeds.  But any modern SATA drive, be it HDD or SDD, will work any any of these speeds.  It will just have lower throughput at SATA 1. But it will still work.  So the stuff about tuning the speed is not needed.

As to BIOS update, there is likely NOT going to be one, since HP has not done Win7-based BIOS updates for a LONG time.  Plus, that is a sure fire way to completely TRASH your PC if it fails. Personally, I NEVER recommend a BIOS update -- it's just too risky.

Is the SSD an EVO model? Asking because for an older PC, you need one of the cheapest SSDs you can buy because they have both low SATA speeds and can not handle the newer SSDs.  I have a $20 SSD in an OLD laptop and it works fine, just not very quickly.

Also, if your BIOS/UEFI settings have Secure Boot, I would disable that to see if it makes a difference.
