Hi, I have an HP Envy laptop running Windows 10 Home (64-bit). This machine is a backup device that I haven’t turned on in several months.

When I tried to boot it up today, the system tells me that my password is incorrect. I’ve checked the input multiple times, and I’m certain it’s correct. I did change my Windows password in the past, but I don’t have a password reset disk.

So far I’ve tried:

  • Double-checking the keyboard layout (caps lock, language, etc.).

  • Making sure the password matches my Microsoft account.

  • Trying older passwords, just in case the system cached the older one.

Unfortunately, none of these worked.

Hi @thumus232,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the login issue!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check Keyboard & Language Settings

At the login screen, click the language/keyboard layout icon (usually bottom-right).

Ensure the correct layout is selected (e.g., US QWERTY).

Confirm Caps Lock and Num Lock states.

Try Microsoft Account Recovery

If your HP Envy uses a Microsoft account, go to https://account.live.com/password/reset on another device.

Follow the steps to reset your password.

Once reset, use the new password to log in on your laptop.

Use the On-Screen Keyboard

At the login screen, click Ease of Access → On-Screen Keyboard.

Sometimes physical keyboard issues (stuck keys, dead keys) prevent correct password entry.

Boot into Safe Mode to Access Account

Restart the laptop → Hold Shift → Click Power → Restart.

Go to Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart.

Press F4 for Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, try logging in using your Microsoft password or local account password.

Check for Local Account vs Microsoft Account

If you previously used a local account, the password may be different from your Microsoft account.

Try any old local passwords you may have used.

Use Password Reset Options (If Available)

On the login screen, select “I forgot my password” (Microsoft account).

If it’s a local account, you can reset it using another admin account or using a bootable recovery tool.

Last Resort – System Restore

If nothing works, boot into Advanced Startup → Troubleshoot → System Restore.

Choose a restore point from before the password issue occurred.

This may revert system settings without affecting personal files.

I hope this helps.

I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" Your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍
