I keep getting a notice constantly that my computer "cannot find script file". Can this be fixed? I'm 75 years old and not good at fixing things. This computer is a Windows 10.

Hi @jbhelp,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
The "cannot find script file" error typically indicates that a script or batch file that Windows is trying to run is missing or corrupted.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you resolve this issue:
1. Check Startup Programs:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Go to the Startup tab.
- Look for any suspicious or unfamiliar entries. If you see anything that looks like a script or unusual, right-click and select Disable.
- Restart your computer and see if the issue persists.
2. Check Task Scheduler:
- Press Win + S and type Task Scheduler, then open it.
- In the left pane, click Task Scheduler Library.
- Look through the list of tasks and check for any that might be running scripts. If you find any unfamiliar tasks, you can disable or delete them. Be careful and make sure to research tasks before removing them.
3. Check Startup Folder:
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type shell:startup and press Enter.
- This will open the Startup folder. Look for any files or shortcuts that might be causing the issue and remove them if they seem suspicious or are unnecessary.
4. Check for Malware:
- Run a full system scan using your antivirus software. Malware or viruses can sometimes cause script errors. If you don’t have antivirus software installed, you can use Windows Defender:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & Threat Protection.
- Click Quick scan or Full scan.
5. Reset File Associations:
- Press Win + S and type Default apps, then open it.
- Scroll down and click on Reset under Reset to the Microsoft recommended defaults.
- This will reset any file associations that might have been altered.
Please find the remaining steps in the next post.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @jbhelp ,
Please find the remaining steps below.
6. Run System File Checker:
- Press Win + X and select Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Type the following command and press Enter: sfc /scannow
- This tool will scan for and attempt to repair corrupted system files.
7. Check Environment Variables:
- Press Win + S and type Environment Variables, then select Edit the system environment variables.
- Click on Environment Variables in the System Properties window.
- In the System variables section, look for PATH. Ensure it doesn’t contain any references to non-existent scripts or directories. If you’re unsure, it’s best to consult with a professional before making changes here.
8. Perform a Clean Boot:
- Press Win + R and type msconfig, then press Enter.
- Go to the Services tab and check Hide all Microsoft services.
- Click Disable all.
- Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
- Disable all startup items.
- Restart your computer and see if the error persists.
If these steps seem too complicated or if the issue remains unresolved, I recommend you contact phone support. They will help you via remote assistance.
