After doing a system restore to factory default and doing all the requested updates to arrive at W7 SP1 the windows Update has problems with the following 2 updates - KB915597 and KB890830 displays the following error [800b0109].
Subseqeuntly i cannot get either Windows defender or MS Security essentials to run . The latter says a problem with the connection to upload defeneitions but my connection is working.
Which of these to programs is suppose to run on this version of OS.

I recommend you wait until all the updates are installed and check if everything is working fine.

I reviewed your post and I understand that the Windows defender is not working on the computer and you are also facing issues with the Windows updates.
Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.
I recommend you download and run the Windows update troubleshooter from the below link and it will automatically find and fix the Windows update related issues.

For the Windows defender issue, follow the below steps.
Make sure Windows Defender is set to update before scanning. Here is how it is done.
Start - All Programs - Windows Defender
Tools - Options - Under Automatic Scanning - check Automatically scan my computer
check Update definitions before scanning
Click SAVE
To look for updates manually - Windows Defender - HELP (the little down arrow on right side of "?" )
- Update Definitions
Then follow the below steps.
Run DiskCleanup - Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup
Start - type in the Search box - COMMAND find at top of the list - RIGHT CLICK - RUN AS ADMIN
sfc /scannow

Hi there thanks for the information.
I have followed your instructions and have managed to get the uploads to load and install.
I have not given feedback as the process is still not complete. Its been going on for more than a day. They dont seem to end.
Is it possibile that there are so many to install ?
The windows difender has come alive by itself by pop up asking to be activated so thats working OK. Its just the updates that are never ending?
