HP Notebook - 17-ca0045nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello

I was prompted by an HP application to Update my BIOS.  This update ended my PC.  I used another person's pc to create the USB recovery flash drive.  I follow the instructions found on HP support to connect the AC, Hold Win+B, press the power button for 2-3 seconds then release, nothing happened.  Even tried the win+V to no avail.  was wondering if anyone else experienced this issue and was able to resolve it.  I think this sucks that HP prompted me to install the file then caused the failure and won't support me because I'm out of warranty.  You would almost think that they had me install the file to cause the failure then to expect me to buy another HP laptop.  Not the first time this has happened.  Been Buying HP and Compaq for years their Products and customer service has been crap as of late.

Hi @Kevin-or-KJ,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I understand that you are having issues with the Bios update.

It sounds frustrating that the recovery process isn't working as expected on your HP Notebook - 17-ca0045nr. The key combination (Win + B or Win + V) you're using is usually for recovering the BIOS, not necessarily creating a USB recovery flash drive. Let’s go through the steps to create a USB recovery drive for Windows 10 properly.

Steps to Create a USB Recovery Drive

Get a USB Flash Drive:

  • You will need a USB flash drive with at least 16 GB of space (some systems might need more).

Create a Windows 10 Recovery Drive:

  • Connect the USB Flash Drive to your laptop.
  • Open the Windows Search bar and type "Create a recovery drive."
  • Click on "Create a recovery drive" and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Make sure to select the option “Back up system files to the recovery drive” (if available).
  • Click Next and select the USB drive you want to use, then click Create.

Use HP Cloud Recovery Tool:

  • Download and install the HP Cloud Recovery Tool from the HP website.
  • Run the tool, follow the on-screen instructions, and it will download the required recovery files to your USB drive.

Additional Steps if the Recovery Process Fails:

If the HP recovery tool or the Windows method doesn’t work, you can try the following:

Ensure USB Drive is Formatted Correctly:

  • The USB should be formatted as FAT32. You can do this by right-clicking on the USB drive in File Explorer > Format > FAT32.

Update BIOS:

  • Make sure your laptop's BIOS is up to date. You can find the latest BIOS update on the HP Support website.
  • Install the update and try the recovery steps again.

Use Media Creation Tool:

  • Download the Media Creation Tool from the Microsoft website.
  • Run the tool and select “Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC.”
  • Follow the steps to create a bootable USB drive.

Try a Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect all peripherals and remove the power adapter.
  • Hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Reconnect the power adapter and try booting the laptop again.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @Kevin-or-KJ,

Please find the remaining steps below.

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • Try Different USB Ports: If the USB is not detected, try using different USB ports (preferably USB 2.0).
  • Check BIOS Settings: Make sure the USB boot option is enabled in the BIOS.
  • Reset BIOS to Defaults: Enter the BIOS setup (usually by pressing Esc or F10 during startup) and reset it to default settings.

If you continue facing problems, using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool is often a more straightforward solution since it directly creates a bootable USB with Windows 10. This method bypasses the HP-specific recovery process and still allows you to install Windows 10.

If this does not help, I recommend you contact phone support for further assistance.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
