Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Only options now working are “select my keyboard layout” and command prompt. No other options offered work. C and D drives show up via command prompt; able to run sfc scannow on C. Is there a way to fix this?

Think I caused the problem. After minor update issues, I cleaned disc and tinkered around (my mistake). (I have list of last actions I took but probably TMI.) This laptop is almost in brand new condition; saved it as a backup for years but updated (Windows, etc.) every few months. I do not have the skills to go further. After hours of research, I am stuck. Laptop too old for cloud recovery option. My skill set it limited.  Can live without personal data, if there is a way to move forward. Many thanks in advance.

Some of the last activities before failure occurred:  1.  Windows Update troubleshooter seemed to be in a loop. 2.  Cleaned multiple system files.  Found suggestion to delete "Software Distribution Folder" - showed clean in "system clean screen" but was not empty in Explorer.  Manually deleted what I was allowed to delete, from within Explorer.  (Previously Windows Update was hanging up when I started tinkering... )
