Microsoft Windows 11

I recently bought a Canon printer and I wanted to install the printer software on my HP notebook. But I keep getting errors when installing the MP Drivers. Canon support tried to help me, but they cannot help me anymore because they say the problem is within the operating system.

How can I make sure that the printer software will be installed correct and that I can use my homeprinter?

Welcome to the HP English Community --

Sure - There could be "something" going on in Windows that is blocking, preventing, breaking, or refusing to install the Canon printer software.

Windows is not unique to HP brand hardware --

Computer hardware of any brand is a shell, a pile of components.

Computer hardware does not care what brand or kind of printer you have.

For example, The computer could just as well be running Linux OS.

The Operating System / version provides a way for the operator (you) to interact with the hardware (disks, display, keyboard, mouse), the network controlled by your router, supported software and applications, and the documents and images files that have been added the Operating System file system (in your your account).

Managing your Windows environment includes installing supported printer software to use with your (presumably) network connected printer.

What to check?

An incomplete list - Canon perhaps already covered one or more of these --

  • Windows Updates -- Make sure Updates are current and installed -- "Pending" updates can result in strange behavior.
  • Perhaps switch ON both Network Discovery and File and printer sharing  --  Example - Settings > Settings_NetworkAndInternet_Advanced_Network_Settings_Advanced_Sharing_Settings_2Settings_NetworkAndInternet_Advanced_Network_Settings_Advanced_Sharing_Settings_2
  • Network -- Make sure the printer is connected to the same network as is your computer.  Make sure the network is marked as "Private" -- "Public" networks might not behave in the way you expect.
  • Permissions -- Make sure your computer account includes Administrative privileges.  "User" accounts cannot install software into Windows.
  • The router that controls your network might be weak, outdated, or missing configuration / settings,
  • Network - If not done, consider assigning a manual / static IP address on the printer and other devices.
  •  Network -- If you are forced to depend on Wireless, add checks for: poor router position / location. obstacles, wrong frequency (band), changing frequencies (might cause the printer to fall off the network).

Windows might refuse to install any software at any time due to issues, errors, or changes deep in the Windows file system.    The solution is this case might be to reload Windows.  No, I am not recommending you do that -- it's a possible solution to consider should everything else fail.
