Compaq 6910p

Hi!

just found this old laptop, and i want to get it back alive

The problem is, i cant find any drivers for the GPU, in adapter properties it just says generic microsoft GPU.

Right now, the system is really laggy, and stuttery, and its running on the wrong resolution (1024x768)

Does anyone know how to fix this, or does anyone have drivers?

Also, it worked on win7 just fine.

OK, so here's how you install the W7 32-bit driver to work on W10, but like I wrote earlier, the driver will install and sometime after you restart the PC, the display does all kinds of crazy things.

Here is the link to the W7 32 Bit graphics driver.  Download and save, but do not run the file.

Driver - HP Compaq 6910p Notebook PC | HP® Customer Support

Then download and install this free file utility.  The 2nd link at the top of the page is for 32 bit.

Download (7-zip.org)

After you install 7-zip, right click on the graphics driver file you saved.

Have 7-Zip Extract to: and let it extract the file into its folder name (sp46004).

After 7-zip creates the driver folder from the exe file, go to the device manager.

Click to expand the Display adapters device manager category.

Click on the Microsoft Basic Display adapter.

Click on the driver tab.  Click on Update driver.

Select the 'Browse my computer for drivers' option, and then at the bottom of that window, select the 'Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer.'

Click on have disk and browse to the driver folder 7-zip created>Packages>Drivers>Display>LH_INF (that's the 32 bit folder)>CL_84776 (setup information file), select the ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 graphics adapter from the list, and the driver should install.

Then restart the PC.

Maybe Microsoft has fixed the screen glitching problem, but I wouldn't know because I have been running W11 on the notebook for two years now since the latest W10 builds have messed up the graphics.

If you experience the same problems, let me know and I will give you the steps to clean install W11 64 bit if you want.

You will need to have 4 GB of memory for the notebook to run decently on W11 as that is the W11 minimum memory requirements.

My 6910p has 8 GB of memory installed (2 x 4 GB of DDR2-6400).

Hi:

The notebook was only supported by HP for up to Windows 7.

If your notebook has the AMD Radeon x2300 GPU, that won't work in W10.

W10 should have installed the graphics drivers if the notebook has an Intel GPU.

The W7 AMD graphics drivers for the AMD GPU used to work in W10, but ever since W10 2004 came out, the GPU quit working right.  The screen would just start pixelating.

Now, here's the strange thing...if you install W11 the AMD GPU works fine, but you have to install W11 64 bit and use a W11 hardware check bypass method to install W11.

I know this because I have a 6910p with the Radeon x2300 GPU and have run every operating system on it from Windows 2000>Windows 11.

If you post the hardware ID for the Microsoft Basic Display adapter, I will let you know what model GPU your notebook comes with.

Use this guide for how to find the hardware ID for a device.

In the properties of the gpu it says some stuff about AMdIMG20231023184832.jpg and ATI, so its most likely the X2300

When i try to find the setup info file, it only shows thisIMG20231023194347.jpg

And if i try to go with that, it just says that my driver is already up to date

I found a way where i can actually find that file, but when i try to install it it comes up with an error saying it isnt compatible, and i should check if its for win32

Ok, i just solved it.

I had to untick a box, and then it showed me 2 options, one that said Microsoft basic display adapter, and another one saying Microsoft basic display adapter (low resolution) (that wasnt there before) And when i tried the same with that, it finally worked!

Thanks so much!!!

You're very welcome.

And the display is working OK with no pixelation or craziness?

If so, that's great.

Yep, all seems fine!

It actually seems like the new updates broke it...

I just updated to the latest version and now its freaking out, flashing and stuff.

Im gonna go back to the previous version
