"HP Chromebook - 14a-na0023cl", Chrome OS got deleted, I tried putting in a bootable USB, but it wasn't recognized, the USB was recognized on my desktop when I pressed f8 to get to the boot menu. I also tried to open some type of BIOS setting my holding escape, and trying a bunch of things with the function keys.

Hi @Cpt187Cloudy,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
If your HP Chromebook 14a-na0023cl has had Chrome OS deleted and you're trying to reinstall the operating system using a bootable USB, but the USB is not recognized, there are specific steps to take to address this issue. Chromebooks have a different boot process compared to traditional laptops, so here’s a detailed approach to get it working:
1. Verify the Bootable USB
Check USB Format:
- Ensure that the USB drive is properly formatted and contains a valid Chrome OS recovery image. Chromebooks typically require a specific format, so verify that the USB was created correctly using the Chrome Recovery Utility.
Create a New Recovery USB:
- If you suspect the USB might be faulty, try creating a new recovery USB on a different computer. Follow the official guide to make sure it's set up correctly.
2. Access the Recovery Mode
Enter Recovery Mode:
- To access the recovery mode on a Chromebook, turn off the Chromebook.
- Press and hold the Esc key and the Refresh key (the circular arrow) simultaneously.
- While holding these keys, press the Power button to turn on the Chromebook.
- Release all keys when you see the recovery screen, which indicates that the Chromebook is in recovery mode.
Use the Recovery Tool:
- Insert your bootable USB drive into the Chromebook.
- The Chromebook should recognize the USB drive in recovery mode. Follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall Chrome OS.
3. Try Different USB Ports
Test Other Ports:
- If the Chromebook has multiple USB ports, try connecting the bootable USB to a different port. Sometimes specific ports might have issues or not recognize bootable devices.
Check USB Drive:
- Try using a different USB drive if possible, as some drives may not be fully compatible.
Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @Cpt187Cloudy,
Please find the remaining steps below.
4. Check for Hardware Issues
Inspect USB Drive:
- Ensure the USB drive is working correctly and is not damaged. You can test it on another computer to confirm its functionality.
Inspect Chromebook USB Ports:
- Check if the USB ports on the Chromebook are functioning correctly by connecting other USB devices.
5. Update or Reinstall Chrome OS Using Recovery Media
Prepare Recovery Media:
- Download and install the Chrome Recovery Utility on a working computer.
- Follow the instructions to create a new recovery media using the correct model number for your Chromebook.
Boot from Recovery Media:
- Restart the Chromebook and enter recovery mode as described earlier.
- Insert the newly created recovery USB and follow the prompts to reinstall Chrome OS.
If you’re still unable to boot from the USB and reinstall Chrome OS, there might be an underlying hardware issue or a more complex problem—Contact HP Phone Support for further assistance.
