Hi @5CG1381HT8

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your laptop is stuck in a system update loop, where Windows is trying to finish updates but encounters an error preventing the process from completing. This issue can happen when updates fail to install properly, leaving the system in a "stuck" state. Here are steps you can take to resolve the issue while minimizing the risk of losing data:

1. Perform a Hard Reset

First, let's start with a hard reset to ensure the system isn’t just stuck temporarily.

  • Power off the laptop completely by holding the Power button for about 10-15 seconds.
  • Once it’s off, unplug the power cable and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Reconnect the charger and the battery, then try turning on the laptop again.

This sometimes helps reset the system and can break the update loop.

2. Boot Into Safe Mode

If the issue persists, you can try booting into Safe Mode, which loads a minimal set of drivers and might allow you to bypass the stuck update.

Steps:

  • Turn off your laptop.
  • Press the Power button and immediately start pressing the F8 key repeatedly (or Shift + F8 for some models) to access the Advanced Boot Options menu.
  • Select Safe Mode and press Enter.
  • If you are able to boot into Safe Mode, this will allow you to troubleshoot further or uninstall problematic updates.

3. Run System Restore in Safe Mode (If You Get There)

If you successfully boot into Safe Mode, you can try running System Restore to go back to a time before the updates started causing issues.

Steps:

  • Type rstrui in the search bar and press Enter.
  • Follow the prompts to select a restore point before the issue started (System Restore might show a few available dates).
  • If the system restore is successful, it will roll back any recent changes (including failed updates) and may resolve the issue without affecting your personal files.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
