Many thanks for your advice.  Although there is obviously a problem with the drivers for the Compaq CQ58,  Microsoft have been in touch to help me with the issue and also another issue related to Office 365 which won't work with others working on the laptop.  As soon as I have exhausted that I will perform the clean install of Windows 10 as you suggested.  Your remark regarding Product Key is very useful as I don't have the Product Key due to the Windows 8 upgrade to windows 10.   The other issue is whether there are Windows 10 drivers available from HP related to this model laptop as I have searched the HP website without success.  Can't blame HP for that as it wasn't one of the laptops tested.

Many thanks for all the support so far and I will be back to let you know haow I've got on with both Microsoft and if I have to the clean install of Windows 10.  I have everything backed up so I'm in a good position.
