Every now and and then specially after leaving my laptop running for lengthy periods I return to find the screen attached. Has anyone had this issue? Can someone hell me resolve this

I can offer only limited advice on the subject...
If extended periods means "Days" or "Weeks",
Perhaps the reason you see this after the computer has been running for extended periods is that the system might be trying to Restart after applying Windows Updates. Depending on how you have set the "Off hours", if the system needs to Restart and it cannot do so because there is something "wrong" in the BIOS or related setups, the system would hang during the attempt to restart.
"Restart" problems are likely not the cause of the problem.
It is more likely a failure in hardware, BIOS, or software instruction that leaves the system in a "between" state from which it cannot recover.
Found this interesting (and rather long) discussion on the subject:
Startup problem, stuck at EFI screen
Suggested fixes vary and include setting the BIOS back to defaults, moving any added disks to a different SATA port...
IF the problem is simply a stuck instruction, you can try a shortened version of the Press and Pray method.
IF the BIOS update is just stuck / stubborn / frozen-in-place half way through the update / boot process,
IF there is not actually anything wrong with the hardware, the windows installation or the File System,
The following procedure might resolve the issue.
“Press and Pray”
- Unplug everything, including power and all other externally connected components
- Press and hold down the power button for forty (40) seconds
- Release the power button
- Plug in only basiccomponents –
- Desktop: Power, wired mouse and keyboard, HDMI to monitor (monitor is powered on)
- Notebook: Connect AC Power
- Switch on the system with power button - Click power and release (as for normal boot)
From what I have read on the subject, "Press and Pray" may not work - on the other hand, it is not likely to make things worse.
