Hello,
I was working the other day and when I took my computer off the backpack I turnt it on and the monitor stayed black.
The power light turns on, and after a while it actually worked, but after a few minutes of using it it restarted itself and a black screen appeared with the word 'wait' and the hp logo.
It stayed like this for 8 hours then it shut itself off.
Yesterday I tried a bios update, and seemed to work at first, then it started restarting by itself and I decided to leave it alone.
Now we're back at the starting point, black screen but light on, how can I fix this without loosing any data?
I've got an exam in a week and I've got my notes in there so I'm pretty desperate.
Thanks for your time.

Hi @LcaVespro,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like your HP laptop is experiencing some issues, and the symptoms you've described can have multiple potential causes. Here are some steps you can try to diagnose and potentially fix the issue without losing your data.
- Perform a Hard Reset: This is a basic troubleshooting step that can help resolve many issues. To do this, unplug your laptop from the power source and remove the battery (if possible). Then, press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds. Reconnect the battery and power source, then turn on the laptop.
- Check for External Devices: Sometimes, external devices like USB drives or peripherals can cause problems. Disconnect all external devices, except for the essentials like the power adapter, mouse, and keyboard, and see if the issue persists.
- Boot into Safe Mode: If your laptop boots into Safe Mode successfully, it could indicate that a third-party application or driver is causing the problem. To boot into Safe Mode, press the F8 key repeatedly during startup (if this key works on your laptop) or use another method specific to your laptop model.
- Run a Disk Check: Your laptop's hard drive may have errors. Boot into Safe Mode and run a disk check by opening a Command Prompt and typing "chkdsk /f" and pressing Enter. Follow the prompts to schedule a disk check on your next reboot. This may take some time.
- System Restore: If your laptop was working correctly at some point in the past, you can try using System Restore to revert your system to a previous state. This may resolve the issue without losing your data. To do this, boot into Safe Mode and search for "System Restore" in the Start menu.
- Repair Windows: You can try to repair Windows using a Windows installation or recovery media. Boot from the installation media and select the "Repair your computer" option. From there, you can attempt to repair the Windows installation.
- Backup Data: If none of the above steps work, it's essential to back up your data before proceeding. You can do this by removing the hard drive from the laptop and connecting it to another computer, or by using data recovery tools.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
