Hi @Francesca_Cup,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding flashing lights on your PC!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Count the Flashes

  • The number of short flashes corresponds to a specific hardware issue (e.g., memory, CPU, graphics).

  • Please count carefully how many times the light flashes in each sequence before pausing.

Power Reset

  1. Shut down the computer completely.

  2. Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).

  3. Hold down the Power button for 15 seconds.

  4. Reconnect the adapter (leave the battery out for now) and try powering on.

Reseat or Test Memory (RAM)

Most common error is memory-related.

  1. If comfortable, open the laptop’s memory compartment.

  2. Remove the RAM sticks and gently reinsert them.

  3. If there are two sticks, try starting the computer with just one at a time.

External Display Test

  • Connect the laptop to an external monitor/TV via HDMI.

  • Press Fn + F4 (or your model’s display toggle key) to check if the issue is just the laptop screen.

BIOS Recovery

  1. Turn off the computer.

  2. Press and hold Windows + B (sometimes Windows + V) while pressing the Power button.

  3. Hold until you hear beeps or see the screen flash → this forces a BIOS recovery.

Identify Error Category

  • If the Caps Lock continues flashing after these steps, note the number of flashes and check against HP’s blink code table (Memory, Processor, System Board, BIOS, etc.).

I hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, the problem has not been resolved. I counted the flashes and there are three slow flashes followed by two fast ones. What should I do?

Hi @Francesca_Cup,

Thank you for getting back with the blink code details. The pattern you described, 3 slow flashes followed by 2 fast flashes — corresponds to a BIOS corruption failure on HP laptops.

Here are the next steps you can try:

1. Perform a BIOS Recovery

Turn off the computer.

Hold down Windows + B (on some models, Windows + V) and then press the Power button.

Keep holding the keys until you hear beeps or see the screen light up with a BIOS recovery message.

Follow the on-screen instructions to restore the BIOS.

2. Reset CMOS (if accessible on your model)

Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery (if it’s removable).

Hold the Power button for 15–20 seconds.

If your model has a CMOS/RTC battery, removing it for a few minutes and reinserting can reset the BIOS.

3. Update BIOS with USB Recovery Drive

If the built-in recovery doesn’t work:

On another working computer, go to the HP Software & Drivers page.

Enter your laptop model, download the latest BIOS update.

Use the HP BIOS Update utility to create a recovery USB drive.

Insert the USB into your faulty laptop and repeat the Windows + B startup process.

I hope this helps.
