HP 17 Laptop PC 17-c2000 IDS Base Model

My cooling fan seems to be running nonstop and I am getting an error message on startup. I tried cleaning/clearing the vents, but that did not work. What else can I do myself (I am not very tech-savvy) or do I need to bring it to a specialist? If need support, do I need HP specific or would a GeekSquad type place be able to help

Hi @CLOMP1882,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP 17 Laptop PC is giving a cooling fan error at startup and the fan is constantly running, here are a few things you can try.

Restart and Reset BIOS

  • Turn off your laptop.
  • Unplug the charger and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Plug the battery/charger back in and turn it on.
  • If you still get the error, enter BIOS (press F10 at startup) and look for a fan-related setting to reset to default.

Check for Dust Buildup Again

  • Even though you've cleaned the vents, try using compressed air to blow out any hidden dust.
  • Tip: Hold the fan blades in place with a toothpick or paperclip to prevent damage.

Update or Reinstall Fan Drivers

  • Open Device Manager (press Windows + X, then select it).
  • Expand "System devices" and look for Thermal Management or Fan Control.
  • Right-click and Update Driver.
  • If that doesn’t work, try Uninstalling the driver and restarting your laptop.

Update BIOS (if available)

  • Go to HP’s official support page.
  • Enter your laptop model and check for BIOS updates.
  • If available, follow HP’s instructions carefully to update it.

Check Fan Function with HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Turn it on and repeatedly press F2 to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run the System Test > Component Test > Fan to see if it detects any issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
