This morning our ISP replaced our modem. All of our devices were able to connect using WiFi and the new password etc. with the exception of my Smart Tank 6000 printer. It's been touchy in the past, looses the WiFi connection periodically but usually I can get it working again by uninstalling the HP Smart app and going through the process of Add a Printer. Today was different don't know why but now I have the dreaded C0000022 error and can;t find a solution.  Error messages from Microsoft suggest printer driver error etc. but what I need is the steps moving me toward a fix. Whatever went wrong was my fault but there nust be a remedy that isn't too complicated.

Has anyone had this problem and remembered the solutio?

@Lucky-L,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

The C0000022 error on Windows is an "Access Violation" code. When it hits an HP printer setup, it means the HP Smart app or Windows is trying to write a new network driver configuration for your HP Smart Tank 6000, but an older, corrupted driver or security block is denying permission.

Because your modem was replaced, your computer is treating the printer as a "ghost device" on an old network ID while trying to force a new one.

Do not worry -this is completely fixable and you don't need to be a tech expert. Follow these steps to clear out the error and get reconnected:

Step 1: Wipe the "Ghost" Drivers Clean:

Before your PC will allow a new connection, we have to remove the old, blocked driver files:

  1. Disconnect any USB cable linking your printer to your computer for now.
  2. Right-click your Windows Start button and select Device Manager.
  3. Click View at the top menu and check Show hidden devices.
  4. Expand the Printers and Print queues sections.
  5. Look for any grayed-out or duplicate versions of your HP Smart Tank 6000. Right-click them and select Uninstall device.

Step 2: Force a Clean Network Reset on the Printer:

Your Smart Tank is still looking for your old modem. We need to clear its memory so it searches for the new one:

  1. Ensure the printer is turned on.
  2. Press and hold the Wireless button (the antenna icon) and the Cancel button (the X icon) on the printer control panel at the same time.
  3. Hold them down for 5 seconds, then release them.
  4. The power light will begin to flash, and the wireless light will start blinking blue. This means the printer is in "Setup Mode" and waiting for your new network.

Step 3: Run the HP Smart Installer as Administrator:

To bypass the C0000022 permission restriction, Windows needs to give the installer full administrative access:

  1. Open your Windows Search bar, type HP Smart, but do not click it.
  2. Right-click the HP Smart App icon in the search results and select Run as administrator.
  3. Click Add Printer inside the app. Because your printer is in Setup Mode (Step 2), the app will find it cleanly, prompt you for your new Wi-Fi password, and push the new drivers through without the error blocking it.

If your printer continues to drop the wireless signal or the app refuses to find it over Wi-Fi, watch this guide on resolving stubborn connection blocks: HP Smart Tank: How to Fix WIFI Connection Issues.

If you hit a roadblock during these steps, let me know:

  • If the wireless light on the printer is blinking blue or solid
  • If you have a third-party antivirus software running (like McAfee or Norton)

Kind Regards,

I'm working through your suggestions as time permits. Learning a bit as I go. Can't be certain at this point but the Blue WiFi light is flashing on the printer meaning that WiFi is available but not connected, however when I try to sign on to the network the router won't accept the WiFi password and there is NO Pin number anywhere on the Hitronic Modem or the EERO WiFi router that I can use. Other searches seem to suggest that I need to access the EERO app and toggle off the 5.4 MHz and keep trying. I might try to, but reluctantly, this is going in exactly the wrong direction . Would a different brand of printer resolve this type of issue?

@Lucky-L,

A good question.

However, buying a different brand of printer will likely result in the exact same frustration, I'm afraid.

The issue isn’t a broken printer or a bad password.

The root cause is a well-known layout conflict between modern Mesh Wi-Fi systems (like EERO) and standard wireless hardware devices.

EERO routers combine both the 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz wireless frequencies into one single network name. While your smartphones and laptops can navigate between them flawlessly, the wireless chip inside your printer can only see the older 2.4 GHz frequency. Because your EERO router is currently shouting at 5.0 GHz, the printer panics and thinks the password is wrong.

Additionally, because EERO routers do not have physical PIN or WPS buttons on the back, traditional "push-button" setups won't work.

Instead of messing with complicated settings or buying a new machine, use this quick workaround to trick the EERO network into cooperating:

The 10-Minute "EERO Troubleshooting" Fix:

Step 1: Pause the 5 GHz Band on your Phone:

You don't need to turn anything off permanently. EERO built a temporary button into their app specifically for situations like this:

  1. Open the eero app on your smartphone.
  2. Tap on Settings (bottom right) > Troubleshooting > My device won't connect.
  3. Tap Temporarily pause 5GHz.
Your EERO network will drop the 5.0 GHz signal for exactly 10 minutes, forcing your smartphone onto the 2.4 GHz frequency.

Step 2: Connect the Printer While Paused:

Now that your phone is on the exact same 2.4 GHz frequency the printer needs, they can talk to each other cleanly:

  1. Make sure your printer's wireless light is still flashing blue. (If it stopped flashing, hold the Wireless + Cancel buttons down for 5 seconds to re-enter setup mode).
  2. Open the HP Smart app on your phone (running as administrator if using a PC).
  3. Click Add Printer.
  4. Select your EERO network and type your standard Wi-Fi password.

Because your phone and printer are on the exact same wavelength, the router will accept the security configuration immediately. Once the 10-minute timer expires, the EERO will automatically turn the 5.0 GHz band back on. Your printer will stay locked onto the 2.4 GHz channel permanently, and the flashing blue light will turn solid blue.

If you try this and the app still refuses to find the printer, let me know:

  • If you have a USB cable handy that connects the printer to a laptop
  • If the HP Smart app gives you a different error message during the 10-minute pause window

Alternatively: Bypassing Wireless Signals

If you want to bypass the wireless signals, the mesh router complications, and the HP Smart app entirely, you can set up your HP Smart Tank 6000 as a direct, local USB printer.

This creates a dedicated physical data line between your computer and the printer, meaning it will print instantly every time without ever needing a Wi-Fi connection.

What You Will Need:

  • A standard USB 2.0 A-to-B Printer Cable (this is the cable with a flat rectangular plug on one end for your computer, and a square plug on the other end for the back of the printer).

Step-by-Step USB Offline Setup

Step 1: Disconnect the Cable First:

Do not plug the USB cable into your computer just yet. Windows needs to prepare for the connection first. If it is already plugged in, unplug it from your PC's USB port.

Step 2: Download the Offline Basic Driver (No HP Smart App Required):

Instead of using the HP Smart app from the Windows Store (which requires an internet connection and an HP account), download the traditional "standalone" basic driver package:

  1. Go to the official Official HP® Drivers and Software Download | HP® Support page.
  2. Type Smart Tank 6000 and select your exact printer.
  3. Look for the section labeled Installation Software and Full/Basic Driver (do not click the HP Smart download link).
  4. Download the HP Easy Start Software or the Basic Driver Package (it will be an .exe file).

Step 3: Run the Installer:

  1. Right-click the downloaded driver file and select Run as administrator.
  2. Follow the on-screen prompts to accept the license agreement.
  3. The software will ask you: "How do you want to connect your printer to this computer?"
  4. Select USB (Physical Cable) and click Next.

Step 4: Plug in the USB Cable When Prompted:

  1. Wait until the software explicitly asks you to connect the cable.
  2. Plug the square end into the back of your Smart Tank printer, and the flat end into any open USB port on your desktop or laptop.
  3. Turn the printer on.
  4. The software will instantly detect the physical hardware connection, assign a local virtual print port (USB001), and complete the driver installation.

Confirming the Fix:

Once the installer finishes, your printer's wireless light might continue to blink blue -you can completely ignore this. The blinking simply means the printer is still looking for Wi-Fi, but since you are using a cable, it doesn't matter.

To make sure everything is working:

  1. Open your Windows Search bar, type Printers & scanners, and press Enter.
  2. You should see HP Smart Tank 6000 (Copy 1) or similar listed as Ready or Idle.
  3. Click on it and select Print a test page.

If you'd like to proceed with this or have any issues, let me know:

  • If your computer has a standard large USB port (USB-A) available, or only small USB-C ports
  • If the installation software gives you any errors while trying to detect the cable connection

Kind Regards,
