HP x2 Notebook Detachable
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have both a Dell Latitude computer with 500 GB drive and a HP x 2 Detachable Notebook. I bought the HP to act as a back if my Dell had a problem and to back up my Dell Document files. The HP has 64 GB  internal and external SD disc (which is where I copy the files to). Both computers have up to date Windows 10 and my Microsoft Office package. There is 50% space left on the Dell and about  90% left on the HP SD card.

I have copied files by inserting the SD disc in my Dell in addition to by sharing the Dell and HP computers via the Internet to copy the files directly from the Dell to the HP SD disc into a files folder. The problem I have is that some of the HP SD disc  file folders maintain the file information - but some folders are empty when I check it later. That is, the files just disappeared! The folder is still on the SD disc but it is empty. And it does not make any difference which method I used to copy the files nor the size of the files. I have tried this several times. The SD disc has only used 4 GB of the 64 GB capacity now. I tried to copy more information with the same results.

I hope someone know what is wrong because none of it makes any sense to me.

HI,

Are you able to add more files by inserting the SD card directly in the Dell? Do they disappear also on the Dell?

Have you ever been able to put more than 4GB on the SD card?

Is it a trusted brand SD card?

What format is it in? Have you tried reformating it?

Let me know,

David

Hello David,

Sorry that I have not replied earlier. I was working on a home project while running some of the tests you mention. So here is what I have found so far.

1) Both the Adapter and SD card are the SanDisc brand. When I first purchased it I did a Quick Format and later on did the long format version when I problems. But nothing changed.

2) Regarding data storage, I gradually added data in the form of files as follows - using the method of sharing my Dell with the HP over the Internet (copying files from the Dell to the HP).

- I started out with 4.05 GB out of 64 GB. The internal capacity is 35 GB out of the 64 GB

- Next I added more files bringing it to 4.95 GB

- Added more files bringing it to eventually 8.2 GB - and I could open any of these files (Word, Excel, etc)

- I restarted my HP computer, finding the files I just added were deleted. The main folder was there but none of the files and any subfolders were also deleted.  However the Properties told me I still had 8.2 GB of data, even though I only had the same files I started out with which added up to 4.05 GB. All of the folders were empty.

- I tried to recopy some of the deleted  files to the SD card, getting the message asking me which version I wanted to use. That is, I could not see any files, but this message seems to tell me that the data is there somehow, supporting the 8.2 GB.

3) I did this both by loading the SD card in my Dell and by loading them from the sharing mode. Same issues.

4) I also tried another 8 GB SD card with the same results.

So, short of a exorcism, have you ever heard of this mess before. Hope you can help.
