Critical Updates no longer being downloaded or installed

My laptop is nolonger updating or installing updates due to storage. yet there is nothing on it apart from its operating system which has now taken up over 90%of the storage. Is there a way around this? I have tried using SD cards for everything I have to save which is mainly word documents but now my laptop is not functioning well.
