Hi @Sscreen,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A blinking cursor and freezing or lagging on your HP laptop can be caused by a variety of issues, ranging from software conflicts to hardware problems. Here are some steps you can take to diagnose and potentially resolve the issue.

Restart Your Laptop

  • Simple Restart: Sometimes, a simple restart can fix temporary glitches.

Check for Software Conflicts

  • Safe Mode: Boot your laptop into Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. Safe Mode runs only essential system programs and can help identify if the problem is caused by third-party software.
    • Windows 10/11: Press Shift while selecting Restart, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings, and then select Restart. Choose Safe Mode with Networking from the list.

Update or Roll Back Drivers

  • Mouse and Touchpad Drivers:
    • Open Device Manager (right-click Start button > Device Manager).
    • Locate and update the drivers for your mouse and touchpad.
  • Graphics Drivers:
    • Update your graphics drivers via Device Manager or visit the HP website for the latest drivers.

Disable Pointer Trails

  • Sometimes, pointer trails can cause cursor issues.
    • Go to Settings > Devices > Mouse > Additional mouse options.
    • Under the Pointer Options tab, uncheck "Display pointer trails" if it's enabled.

Adjust Touchpad Settings

  • Disable Touchpad Temporarily:
    • If you're using an external mouse, consider disabling the touchpad to see if the problem persists.
    • Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad and toggle the touchpad off.

Check for Malware

  • Run a Full System Scan:
    • Use a reliable antivirus or antimalware tool to scan your laptop for any malicious software that might be causing the issue.

Windows Updates

  • Ensure Your System is Up to Date:
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.

Check for Hardware Issues

  • External Devices:
    • Disconnect any external devices to see if one of them is causing the issue.
  • Battery and Power Supply:
    • Ensure your laptop battery and power supply are functioning correctly. Sometimes, power issues can cause system instability.

System File Check

  • Run SFC and DISM Commands:
    • Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following commands.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

sfc /scannow

Reset Your Laptop

  • Last Resort:
    • If none of the above solutions work, consider resetting your laptop to factory settings. Ensure you back up all important data before doing this.
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery and select "Reset this PC".

By following these steps, you should be able to identify and resolve the issue with your cursor blinking and laptop freezing.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
