DV6810US. No OS on HDD and can not read from DVD or USB to install new disk. BIOS works ok and set boot order correctly. DVD spins up and can eject ok then but screen goes black with cursor blinking in upper left corner. Once this happens dvd or usb does not work. Have tried usb stick with win 7 os on it, dvd and external usb dvd drive but none working. Any help would be great as the computer is not overheating and stays on a long time. I would like to get this one and a DV 6910US with same issue working. I hate to see a computer go to waste. Thanks in advance.

Is this re. HP Pavilion DV6810US - an old model from several years ago ?

What you describe sounds like the DVD media/USB device itself (or actually the image there) may not be OK. PC attempts to boot from it and it does not work.

For test purpose, can you try with Linux-based ISO - e.g. Ubuntu desktop >> Download 32-bit version

When ready with the USB drive or with the DVD:

Please, shutdown the computer using the power button.

Insert the Windows USB thumdrive or the DVD prepared previously

Power  on the PC.

As soon as you press the power-on button, keep hitting the F9 button

Select the thumb drive or DVD as boot option >> http://www.support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01443326/

Follow the on-screen instructions to boot from Ubuntu. Let me know if this works.

Thanks for the help. I was able to install Ubuntu with no problems. I tried to install Windows 7 from the DVD drive but was unable to. The computer kept booting into Ubuntu. How can I get Windows 7 installed?

Since you managed to install or boot from any other (in this case Linux based) OS - this test you just performed proves my assumptions - that the Windows 7 installation media is not OK. It may be not properly burned, the ISO may be corrupted, the DVDs may be scratched, etc.

If you want to keep Windows 7 on these PCs - It is recommended that you obtain another Windows 7 installation media, re-download the ISO and burn it again.

If your Windows 7 license is FPP type - full retail package (and not an OEM version) you can download legitimate and original versions of Windows 7 from Microsoft web site/servers:  >> https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7

Re. HP Pavilion DV6810US - from what I see it comes originally with WIndows Vista preinstalled. If you want to install Windows Vista - the original version from HP - you can purchase HP Recovery media from here >> http://www.computersurgeons.com/p-15609-recovery-kit-483904-002-for-hp-model-number-dv6810us.aspx

The Install media was not at fault but you did put me on the correct path. The dvd drive is not working after the initial startup. I was able to download a Windows 7 iso and create a boot usb stick. I was then able to install Windows 7 SP1 to the computer. I now have the problem with the dvd not showing or working in Windows. I have tested the dvd drive in another computer and it is good. I believe it is the driver as device manager shows several items do not have drivers installed. I now need to find drivers for this computer running Windows 7.  Any help getting the correct drivers would be appreciated.

This is extremely strange because you use the very same DVD drive to install Ubuntu, to read from its DVD, did you ?

Windows is capable of automatically recognizing the DVD drives (DVD reader devices) so it does not need 3rd party drivers to be installed to be able to recognize and use these. In my whole life I have never seen a Windows needing a 3rd party driver to be able to recognize a DVD device, so it must be something else.

Both Pavilion DV6810US and Pavilion DV6910US are old devices and HP never officially released Windows 7 drivers for them. There are Windows Vista HP drivers available here:

They may work on W7, though there is no 100% guarantee.

I did not use the dvd to install Ubuntu. I used a USB thumb drive. I believe it is due to the fact the chipset driver is not installed. I will be able to find out once I get the drivers updated. I appreciate all the help you have provided. Thanks.
