Hi @nello3

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Boot Device Not Found" and "Hard Disk (3F0)" error message on your HP laptop typically indicates that your laptop is not able to find the hard drive or there is an issue with the system’s ability to load the operating system. This could be caused by a few different things, such as BIOS settings, a damaged hard drive, or issues with the boot order.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

1. Check BIOS Boot Order

The BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is responsible for determining the order in which your computer searches for devices to boot from (e.g., hard drive, USB, CD). If your BIOS is not properly detecting the hard drive, you may encounter this error.

Steps to Check/Change BIOS Boot Order:

  1. Turn off the laptop completely.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately press the Esc key (or F10) repeatedly to access the BIOS or UEFI settings.
  3. In the BIOS menu, use the arrow keys to navigate to the Boot Options or Boot Order section.
  4. Make sure that your hard drive (e.g., "HDD" or "Primary Drive") is listed as the first boot device.
  5. If it's not, change the boot order to ensure the hard drive is first in line.
  6. Save the changes and exit the BIOS (usually by pressing F10 and selecting Yes to save).

After making sure the BIOS is configured correctly, restart the laptop and check if the system is now able to detect the hard drive.

2. Run Diagnostics to Check for Hard Drive Issues

Since you're seeing the error "Hard Disk (3F0)", it could indicate an issue with your laptop's hard drive. HP laptops have a built-in diagnostics tool that can help you check the health of your hard drive.

Steps to Run System Diagnostics:

  1. Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly to enter System Diagnostics.
  2. Select Hard Drive Test or Quick Test from the diagnostics menu.
  3. Let the test run. It will check if there are any issues with the hard drive.
  4. If the test shows any issues, the hard drive may be failing or damaged, and you may need to replace it.

If the diagnostic test indicates no issues with the hard drive, move on to the next steps.

3. Check for Loose or Disconnected Cables

In some cases, the issue can be due to a loose or disconnected hard drive cable. If you're comfortable doing so, you can open up the laptop and check the connection between the hard drive and the motherboard. If you're not comfortable doing this, I recommend contacting a technician.

  • For laptops: The hard drive is usually accessible by removing the bottom panel.
  • Ensure the hard drive is firmly connected and not loose.

4. Try Booting from a USB Drive (Windows Recovery)

If your hard drive appears to be intact but you still get the "Boot Device Not Found" error, it may be an issue with the operating system or boot files.

Steps to Boot from a USB Drive (Windows Recovery):

  1. Create a Windows Installation/Recovery USB on another computer.
    • You can download the Windows 10 or 11 installation tool from the Microsoft website.
    • Follow the instructions to create a bootable USB drive.
  2. Insert the USB drive into your HP laptop and restart it.
  3. When your laptop restarts, press Esc (or F9) to access the boot menu.
  4. Select the USB drive as the boot device.
  5. Once Windows Setup loads, select Repair your computer instead of installing.
  6. Go to Troubleshoot > Startup Repair or try System Restore if you have a restore point available.

This can help repair the boot files or restore your system to a working state.

5. Reinstall Windows (if necessary)

If the above steps don’t work and the hard drive is functioning properly, you may need to reinstall the operating system on the hard drive.

Steps to Reinstall Windows:

  1. Follow the steps above to create a Windows Installation USB.
  2. Boot from the USB drive as mentioned.
  3. Select Install now and proceed with a fresh installation of Windows.

6. Check for a Failing Hard Drive

If none of the above steps resolve the issue and the hard drive is still not being recognized in the BIOS, it’s possible that the hard drive has failed. In that case:

  • If the laptop is still under warranty, contact HP Support for a potential repair or replacement.
  • If the warranty has expired, you may need to consider replacing the hard drive

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
