Hi @5CG0398FBG,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
A black screen with the message "boot device not found" and a prompt to install an operating system can be indicative of several issues with your HP Pavilion X360 laptop. Here are some steps to help you diagnose and potentially resolve the problem.
Check the Boot Order:
- Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI setup by pressing a specific key (usually F2, F10, F12, ESC, or Delete) during startup. The key to access the BIOS/UEFI may vary depending on your laptop model.
- In the BIOS/UEFI settings, go to the Boot or Boot Order section.
- Ensure that the primary boot device is set to your laptop's hard drive (usually listed as HDD or SSD) rather than an external device or network option.
- Save the changes and exit the BIOS/UEFI setup. Restart your laptop to see if it boots normally.
Check for Loose Connections:
- If you recently opened your laptop or made hardware changes, ensure that all internal components, such as the hard drive or SSD and RAM, are properly seated and connected.
Boot from a Bootable USB/DVD:
- If your laptop is still not booting after checking the boot order, you may need to create a bootable USB drive or DVD with a Windows or Linux operating system (depending on your preference).
- Insert the bootable USB drive or DVD into your laptop and restart it.
- Boot from the USB drive or DVD by selecting it from the boot menu (usually accessed by pressing a key like F12 during startup).
- Follow the on-screen instructions to attempt a repair or reinstall of the operating system.
Test the Hard Drive/SSD:
- If the above steps don't resolve the issue, it's possible that your hard drive or SSD has failed. You can test this by running hardware diagnostics. HP laptops often have built-in diagnostics; you can usually access them by pressing F2 or ESC during startup.
- If the diagnostics confirm a hardware issue, you may need to replace the faulty drive.
Recovery Options:
- If you have a recovery partition on your laptop, you can try accessing it to restore the system to its factory settings. The key to access this option varies by laptop model (commonly F11 or ESC).
Remember to back up your important data before attempting any repair or reinstall of the operating system, especially if you suspect a hard drive or SSD issue.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
