I got this little 14" X Flip a few days ago, and I like the config which is perfect for my use case. I like the low power Ultra 7 and how cool and quiet the laptop is. Lastly, it is light enough, and looks really stylish in the dark blue paint. The screen is somewhat too reflective but I can live with that.

But the keyboard is just awful. I am trying to learn how to use it real hard. Yet I have a feeling it only gets worse the more I type. The lack of spacing between keys and their large size makes finding the right key difficult. I have a near perfect accuracy on my old laptop with traditional, island type keys, and on any other external keyboard. But this one I make typos in every other word. Worst thing is this is supposed to be a portable laptop. If I meant for it to be a desktop hooked up to external keyboard, I wouldn't mind.

Did have a similar experience? Did you overcome it? I wanted to like this machine but the keyboard is a deal breaker. Should I give up and return the Omnibook?

Hi @baheuko5

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I can appreciate how disappointing it feels when the keyboard experience doesn’t match the rest of the qualities you enjoy about the OmniBook X Flip. You’ve already given it a fair chance, and the fact that you’re noticing consistent typos compared to your older laptop or external keyboards shows that this isn’t just a matter of habit—it’s a genuine usability concern for you.

Adapting to the flat keyboard

Some users do adjust over time, but it often requires deliberate practice:

  • Typing drills: Short sessions focusing on accuracy rather than speed can help retrain finger placement.
  • Lower key travel awareness: These keyboards respond to lighter touches; pressing too firmly can cause misalignment.
  • Hand positioning: Keeping wrists level and reducing lateral movement helps compensate for the larger key surface.

That said, if after a few weeks of consistent use you still find accuracy dropping, it may not be the right fit for your typing style.

Practical options

  • External keyboard for long sessions: If portability is important but typing comfort is critical, pairing the OmniBook with a slim external keyboard when stationary can balance both needs.
  • Adjusting expectations: For light tasks (emails, browsing, notes), the built‑in keyboard may suffice, while heavier typing can be shifted to an external option.
  • Return/exchange consideration: If typing is central to your daily use and the keyboard continues to feel like a barrier, it’s reasonable to consider whether another model better suits your workflow.

You’ve already identified that the machine meets your performance and design needs, but the keyboard feels like a deal breaker. While some users adapt, others never fully adjust to flatter layouts. The most effective approach is to give yourself a short trial period with focused practice, and if accuracy doesn’t improve, pairing with or switching to a device with a more traditional keyboard may be the better path.
