HI - I initiated a RECOVERY from the cloud and it downloaded fine and restarted but now it seems to be stuck in "Resetting this PC" at 36%.  Been there for well over an hour or two.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi @kevaug,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your system is stuck at 36% during the "Resetting this PC" process, it can be frustrating. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Be Patient

  • Sometimes, the resetting process can take longer than expected, especially if there’s a large amount of data to be processed or if there are issues with the system. If the progress bar hasn't moved for just a short while, it might be worth waiting a bit longer.

2. Check for Disk Activity

  • Listen for Sounds: If your hard drive is still making noise (e.g., spinning or clicking), the system might still be working on the reset.
  • Check Lights: Look for any activity lights on your computer that might indicate hard drive or SSD activity.

3. Power Cycle the PC

  • Force a Restart: If it seems to be completely stuck and no progress is being made, you might need to force a restart:
    • Press and hold the power button until the PC turns off.
    • Wait for a few minutes, then turn the PC back on and check if it continues the reset process or gives you options to recover.

4. Boot into Safe Mode or Recovery Environment

  • Access Advanced Options:
    • Restart your PC and repeatedly press the F8, F11, or Shift + F8 keys (depending on your PC) during startup to access the Advanced Startup Options.
    • From there, you can try to access Safe Mode or Troubleshoot options.
  • Try a Different Recovery Option: If you can access recovery options, try to initiate the reset process again or use System Restore if available.

5. Check for Hardware Issues

  • Disconnect Peripherals: Unplug all external devices (USB drives, printers, etc.) and try the reset process again.
  • Check RAM and Storage: If you have access to the internal components, ensure that the RAM and storage drives are properly connected.

6. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Power Off: If your PC remains stuck and unresponsive, perform a hard reset:
    • Turn off the PC by holding down the power button.
    • Unplug the power cord from the PC and wait a few minutes.
    • Plug it back in and power it on.

7. Use Installation Media

  • If the system still won’t progress, you might need to use installation media to perform a fresh install:
    • Create a Windows Installation USB: Use another computer to create a Windows 11 installation USB. You can use the Microsoft Media Creation Tool to do this.
    • Boot from USB: Insert the USB drive into your PC and boot from it. You may need to change the boot order in the BIOS/UEFI settings to boot from the USB drive.
    • Reinstall Windows: Follow the prompts to reinstall Windows 11.

8. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Sometimes, BIOS or firmware updates can resolve issues with the installation process. Check the HP website for any firmware updates that might be available.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for the reply Rachel - you were correct patience was the key!  I had been staring at 36% for so long and then it went to 38% and I doubted myself that maybe it was 38% all along and my eyes were playing tricks on me but then it slowly started making progress again.  The initial recovery was initiated because the machine had slowed to a crawl so I figured it would be a good idea to get it back to factory settings and start over.  I realize this is a 2017 machine with not the best specs but I don't think its obsolete for email, spreadsheets and web surfing!    I did notice when you first load chrome or boot up it certainly isn't instantaneous but once its up it seems to move pretty good.  Maybe more RAM would help?  Thanks again for the reply - much appreciated.
