Pavilion 15 - n010tx
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Hi all,

I actually messed up my BIOS. My original BIOS version was F.66. But then i upgraded it to F.67. Now the problem is, PC is over heating way more than usual and the Battery is draining very fast.  The PC is just 1.5 years old, all these happed after bios update.

Now i want to downgrade my bios to factory version, from F.67 to F.66.
My System Board ID is: "2184"

[Moderator edited image with Serial Number]

While browsing for a way to downgrade, i came to know that the BIOS file to be flashed should be having a "particular file name"(for the .bin file), which is the board number preceeded by a '0'

So in my case it should be "02184.bin"

Anyways, i downloaded F.66 BIOS file "sp67140.exe" from HP driver website for my pc.
But since i have Version F.67 currently installed on my pc, it won't allow me to update BIOS by directly running the "sp67140.exe" executable. The option to update bios is un-clickable.

So i tried the other option of "Create Recovert USB Flash drive". Well, that too didn't work out.

So, next is manual option. For which i go to the extract location of sp67140.exe, which is "C:\SWsetup\SP67140"

Extract location of sp67140.jpg

As you can see, the file name's are "02183F66.bin" and not "02184.bin"

Any way i copied all those 4 files as such with no renaming to a USB drive under "G:\Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\Current"

I used the System diagonostic option from startup by pressing "esc" and the "F2" as instructed, then choose firmware management and browsed to USB drive to file "02183F66.bin" file. But it said, selected file is not flashable (Not the exact sentence.)

I then tried to rename the file to "02184.bin" , then did the same again. This time it said, " Current Version is  F.67 , after update Version is: F.66," it also said, it needs the signature file on the same folder. I clicked next but it said "Unable to open BIOS signature file".

Is there any way to find the required Signature file

I cannot rollback using "Windows key + B" since i messed that up too in an accident. now current version and previous version files in HDD are F.67.

Is there any way to solve this, may be a force downgrade???

Thanks for any help in advance, i hope i give pretty much all details about this problem, Let me know if anything more is needed . :smileyhappy:

Hi nikhil2000... I'm sorry that you're having this issue with your Pavilion 15 - n010tx.

Unfortunately, version F.67 does not support downgrading.  The update addressed a security issue, and the fix does not allow a rollback to an earlier version of BIOS.

There may be some good news here.  From our internal documentation, it appears that the security fix may be the only update in F.67.  I wouldn't expect that to impact power management at all... so, there may be another cause for this issue.  I would rrecommend eviewing the BIOS setting configurations and OS system configuration to see if something may have changed.

Also, a couple of items for reference:

  1. You can use the "Create Recovery USB Flash Drive" option int he SOftPAQ to create a flash drive with the necessary directory structure, BIOS binaries, and (where applicable) signature file(s).
  2. You can reenable your system to support not just [Win][B], but automatic recovery of BIOS main area corruption by downloading and reinstalling the UEFI Diagnostics (available here), then rerunning the F>67 SoftPAQ.

I hope this helps!

Hi, @ Bruce_T

Thanks for the reply. The main problem is that the battery draining rate has increased after the update.

As per the HP Driver Download site, the BIOS versions are mainly F.67 & F.66 that is currently on top.
But One says (F.66) it is specifically for Intel Hardwares, while the other (F.67) doesn't mention that at all.

F66 & F67.jpg

So, i kind of feel like , oh that might be the problem., though there is only a security update in F.67 as the difference from F.66

Any way , without AC power the PC now stays ON for just 1 Hr from 100% charged state, before it sleeps.

Thanks for your help sir.

Hello zahid,

If u upgraded to F.67, then there is only one way to downgrade. That is Win+B key.
If that doesn't help, then there is no easy way to downgrade.Bcoz F.67 is designed to prevent any changes that downgrade sys BIOS - Which is the latest security update.

So only one way left to downgrade.
Go to an expert technician, and remove the bios chip from system board & then program the chip with F.67 BIOS firmware.

Please Do that on your own risk. I dont take responsibility for any problems caused in the process.

I didn't do that. I just accept that i did the unnecessary update on Bios.

Hello nikhil2000...

I'm sorry, but the [[WIN][B]] key combination will not assist here - the same restriction on downgrading from F67 applies.
