It started after using Norton Driver Updater. I figured that it was PCI Realtek adapter causing the problem. I reverted and it stopped. After an update it started again. Originally it was win 10 and I got it upgraded to 11.

This lap top is almost 6 years old and there are no win 11 drivers in the product's HP page. Not sure which one to update which one not to at this point.

Anyone has any solutions to this thing which keeps happening and booting every 5 minutes after blue screen?

Thanks in advance...

Hi @muraterguden,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Driver Power State Failure" error is often linked to a driver issue, particularly with hardware drivers that have compatibility issues or are not optimized for your current operating system. Here's a systematic approach to resolving the problem.

Revert to a Known Stable State

  • Since the issue reappeared after an update, boot into Safe Mode and:
    • Uninstall the problematic Realtek PCI adapter driver.
    • Revert it to a previous version if possible, or use the default driver provided by Windows.

Disable Problematic Device Temporarily

  • If the Realtek adapter isn't critical for your tasks (e.g., if you use Wi-Fi instead of Ethernet), consider disabling it in the Device Manager:
    • Press Windows + X > Device Manager > Locate the adapter > Right-click and select Disable.

Use Compatible Drivers

  • Since HP doesn't offer Windows 11 drivers for your laptop:
    • Download and install Windows 10 drivers for your model from the HP website. Windows 11 is designed to support most Windows 10 drivers.
    • Realtek drivers can also be sourced from their official website, but ensure you select a version compatible with Windows 10.

Configure Power Settings

Driver Power State Failure errors are often related to power management settings. To adjust these:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Locate the Realtek adapter.
  3. Right-click > Properties > Power Management tab.
  4. Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Update or Roll Back Other Drivers

Other outdated or improperly updated drivers might also contribute. Focus on:

  • Graphics drivers (NVIDIA/AMD/Intel).
  • Chipset drivers (Intel/AMD chipset drivers for your motherboard).
  • Use Windows Update to check for available updates or utilities like Snappy Driver Installer to find compatible ones.

Perform a System File Check

Corrupted system files might contribute to the issue. Run the following commands in Command Prompt (as Administrator):

  1. sfc /scannow
  2. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Restore Windows or Revert to Windows 10

  • If all else fails and the issue persists:
    • Use the System Restore point created before the driver update to roll back the system state.
    • Consider reverting to Windows 10, which aligns better with your laptop's supported drivers.

Update BIOS/Firmware (Optional but Risky)

If a BIOS update is available for your laptop:

  • Download it from HP's support page.
  • Carefully follow instructions, as improper updates can brick your system.

Test for Hardware Issues

Given the laptop's age:

  • Test your hard drive and RAM for potential issues:
    • Use chkdsk /f /r for hard drives.
    • Use tools like MemTest86 to test RAM.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi

Stop using 3rd party apps to fix what windows does, norton is a preferred choice of the user but not always the best.

Even tho your machine is getting on a bit you should be good with windows updates - if not go get the last supporting drivers for the devices that dont appear and you should be good as win update should then see the device and give the only generic one it has.

Reboot and keep pressing F8 (normally) might be different for you and select safe mode ?

once booted with no wifi / ethernet etc leave it sat there and see if it does it again .... if not then back up your files and re-install windows, 3rd party apps inc norton may not be the best choice for your machine. if it does not repeat its poor show then you know its software (Norton) related and best to save your files and start again from new..

Happy hunting
