I recently reinstalled Windows and I've had a lot of trouble downloading all of the correct drivers for my machine. why on Earth is there not some software that just automatically detects my hardware and downloads all the best drivers for my needs? When I go to the page listing all of the drivers for my model, it's an enormous list and each category has four or five options slightly different than one another. The HP support assistant tool is no help. It just keeps redirecting me back to that massive list. Am I really supposed to try by trial and error every single driver until my laptop does everything it's supposed to? How do you automatically detect and download the best drivers for your hardware? Model is G72-262NR, Windows 7 professional 64-bit

Hi:
If the HP support assistant didn't find the drivers you need, then there isn't any other tool you can use to automatically detect and download the drivers for your model.
I looked up the parts list for your notebook and, then went to the driver page.
You want to install the following three drivers in this order and restart the PC after each installation.
Intel chipset installation utility:
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp49501-50000/sp49523.exe
Intel graphics driver:
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp48001-48500/sp48275.exe
Audio:
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp49501-50000/sp49526.exe
Then you can install these drivers and you only have to restart the PC if prompted to do so.
Ethernet:

Wifi:

Bluetooth:
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp47001-47500/sp47022.exe
Touchpad:

SD card reader:

Modem:
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp47001-47500/sp47185.exe
Quick Launch software:

I think there is a driver missing from the support page.
You need this driver if you see a device in the device manager labeled as a PCI Simple Communications Controller.
Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver

Are those same drivers also for G72-B60US?
If not, then has the driver support for old computers been offloaded from HP to some other legacy-support company?
I'd especially like to find out if there's an available BIOS update.
When I search HP for drivers, HP just says, "We were unable to find drivers for your product." Windows 10 system update doesn't find one. HP Support Assistant doesn't find one. Apparently I can't even get the old ORIGINAL drivers anymore from HP.

There is a full set of W7 drivers on your notebook's support page.
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-G72-Notebook-PC-series/4247537/model/4308568
At the top of the page where it indicates "We were unable to find drivers for your product," You click on the 'Choose a different operating system' link, and from there you can select W7 32 or 64 bit.
W7 was the only supported OS for your notebook.
Your notebook is not supported by HP for W10 since it was made prior to August of 2013.

F.48 is the last BIOS update for that model, so you are good there.

You're very welcome, Scott.
Yes, I have HP notebooks even older than yours that run W10 just fine.
It's just that HP doesn't support them with any W10 drivers.
Fortunately, W10 installs almost everything, and for the couple of drivers mine needed, I used the W7 drivers and they worked.
