Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Since an update in windows 10 a few months ago I can't disable the Elan touchpad, you can click the boxes to disable it and/or not be used when mouse is plugged in but nothing works.  I finally had to cover the touchpad with a hard cardboard cover. This is only a two year old HP laptop and it seems that every time Microsoft updates something, something else doesn't work properly. My wife bought an Apple Mac Pro just before I bought this, it was 30% more money but she's never had these kinds of problems.  Does anyone have a clue how to fix this?  Thanks in advance

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,  I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:
Let's try this method:

  1. Press Windows Key + X to open Win + X menu and select Control Panel from the list.
  2. When Control Panel opens, go to Hardware and Sound section and select Mouse.
  3. When the Mouse settings window opens, you should see ELANor Device Settings tab. Switch to it.
  4. Locate Disable internal pointing device when the external USB pointing device is attached option and enable it.
  5. Click Apply and OK to save changes.

If this fails, then uninstall the touchpad device from device manager and try the above steps to disable the ELAN touchpad.

  • Press Windows+X to open the menu, and choose Device Manager on it.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thanks for the attempt Echo_Lake but that didn't help. I have an Elan program under programs and I have used it to "disable the touchpad when a mouse is detected" and I have done the "disable" at all times and applied it. In the window I see it shows the touchpad to be disabled, but it is not, this has happened since an update a few months ago, which is common with Microsoft updates, it seems that they screw one thing up every time they try to fix another one.  The touchpad has been covered with heavy cardboard for several months which is ridiculous after spending so much money on a laptop.

Thank you for posting back.

The last thing I can suggest a system restore:

System Restore returns your computer to the files and settings from the restore point. Your personal files and documents are not affected.

You can also undo a System Restore if the restore does not resolve the issue or if the issue becomes worse.

You can also contact HP support for assistance. They can remotely access your system to help alleviate difficulties: www.hp.com/contacthp/

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
