I purchased my elitebook 8460p, 64-bit Windows Ultimate a few weeks ago. I have gone through the routine of updating drivers, but the one thing I can't get to work right is the brightness. It's stuck on full blast! I feel like I need a break every 5 minutes from my screen!
I turned off the auto-brightness-adjustor just in case that had gone hay-wire. Nothing. the fn keys don't adjust the brightness. The Settings menu doesn't adjust the brightness. The sliders move back and forth, but the brightness stays the same!
I'd love some ideas on how to get this brightness turned down. Working at night is nearly impossible

Hi:
It sounds to me like the graphics driver(s) are not installed.
Go to the device manager, click to expand the Display Adapters device manager category, and let me know what you see listed there.
Also, there is no such operating system as W8.1 Ultimate.
Only Vista and W7 have 'Ultimate' versions.

Interesting.
If the Intel graphics adapter is what is listed under the display adapters device manager category, you should be able to adjust the brightness.
If you are currently running W10, try the W10 hotkey software and see if you can adjust the brightness afterward.
This package provides support for special function keys on supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system.
