Encryption is evidently not an option with home version of Windows 11..so how do I prevent files from being accessible to unknown persons?

It sounds like you're referring to BitLocker, a feature available on Windows 11 for encrypting your drive, but since you're using the Home edition of Windows 11, full BitLocker management is not supported on this version. However, Windows 11 Home does come with a similar feature called Device Encryption, which might already be enabled on your system if the BitLocker recovery key (the 48-digit number) was provided.

 

Here's a quick breakdown of how BitLocker and Device Encryption differ.

 

  • BitLocker: Full-featured drive encryption available on Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions. It includes more control and options.
  • Device Encryption: A simpler version of BitLocker, often enabled automatically on devices with compatible hardware, such as TPM (Trusted Platform Module) and Secure Boot, available in Windows 11 Home.

To check if Device Encryption is enabled:

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption.
  2. If you see "Device encryption" in this menu, you can check whether it is turned on or off. If it's off, you can enable it here.

Regarding the 48-digit BitLocker recovery key:

That key is used to unlock your drive if you're locked out (for example, if your computer doesn't recognize your credentials or if you move the drive to a different machine). It isn't directly used for encrypting files. If Device Encryption is active, your drive is already encrypted, and that key would be necessary to recover access in certain situations.

 

If you wish to encrypt specific files rather than the entire drive, you may need to use third-party software like VeraCrypt, as Windows 11 Home doesn't include the ability to encrypt individual files with BitLocker.

You're right that BitLocker, which provides full disk encryption, is only available on the Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions of Windows 11. Since you have the Home version, here are some alternative methods to help protect your files.

 

Use File Encryption Software:

  • VeraCrypt: A free and open-source encryption tool that lets you create encrypted volumes or encrypt entire partitions.
  • AxCrypt: A user-friendly encryption tool that's free for basic use and offers additional features in its premium version.

Password-Protect Files and Folders:

  • 7-Zip: This file archiver allows you to create encrypted archives. Just compress files or folders and set a strong password to encrypt them.
  • WinRAR: Similar to 7-Zip, it lets you create password-protected archives.

Secure Your User Account:

  • Strong Password: Ensure your Windows account has a strong password.
  • PIN: Set up a PIN as an additional layer of security.

Cloud Storage Services:

  • Some cloud services offer encryption and can keep your files secure, such as Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive with additional encryption tools.

Keep Your System Updated:

  • Regularly update Windows and software to protect against vulnerabilities.

 

These methods can help secure your files, even if you don’t have access to BitLocker.

I do have a Bitlocker number...is it what I use for encrypting files?  It is a 48 digits number...
