Purchased HP recovery media and it does not work, gets an error message and I spent 58 minutes on the phone with HP attempting to get an answer or simply return the discs for my money back.

No phone number, link or any return info on the reciepts or emails.

Hi @blakeusa

Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting.

Straight to the question - you have to contact HP in order to return the media to them.

If in the USA, call and try :

>> call  1-800-474-6836

In case of problems, ask to speak with a supervisor or senior

If not in the USA, call and try:

If you continue to face difficulties, please post again...

With regards to the technical part of the problem - how to get the correct recovery media or how to reinstall Windows

HP cannot ship you recovery media for Windows 8/8.1 because these are old and no longer supported by HP. HP has recovery media for the latest OS version - a.k.a. Windows 10 (for the models with Windows 10). Therefore, the recovery media you have is most likely for another different model of PC.

Let me know:

- why you want to use recovery media

- have you performed any hardware changes to your PC such as HDD change, motherboard change, etc...

- your full HP product model and product number (p/n) >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00033108

Looking forward to your reply.

The HD failed and needed to replace it.

My son prefers Win 8 vs Win 10.

Hi @blakeusa

I cannot be 100% sure about this situation because I am not infront of the computer but usually when someone gets an error that the media is not compatible, it is not compatible.

Am I correct to assume that HD means hard disk drive (HDD) for you ? I am not sure what you did and how you tested the hard disk but if it failed, here is what you could do

If your computer is with warranty period expired, you will need to replace the faulty HDD - buy new one on your own. There are variety of options - vendors you can choose from. You can get it online or from PC retail store, or from HP parts store http://partsurfer.hp.com/

You need HDD with the very same size as the current one or bigger (small will not work) - e.g. if your current HDD is with 500 GB capacity, your new HDD/SDD must also be 500 GB or with bigger capacity.  I recommend you consider HDDs with RPM 7200 as they as slightly faster, 5400 RPM is slower >> https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/r/rpm.htm

*** How to replace the faulty HDD with new HDD:  please, find info and instruction in your computer's manual or watch YouTube videos examples for your HP model.

Here is the service manual for your model

page 56/64

If you do not want to do this on your own, please bring the computer (or ship it) to HP Authorized Service Center where the technicians will do this for you. If you are not sure where such a center is located, check these or contact HP for assistance in finding the nearest one for you:

With regards to reinstalling Windows and using recovery media, if you returned the wrong one to HP, please provide your full product model and product number (as requested before).
