Microsoft Windows 11

I am in the process of setting up this laptop.  I went to create a restore point and got error 0x800423f4.  I tried 3 times.

It supposedly is a timing error and a solution is to reduce tasks and/or reboot.   Closing stuff did not help, but so far the reboot did.   I was originally concerned that it was write error to the SSD, but that does not seem to be the case.

Does anyone have more experience with this error?   It has been around a LONG time.   The posted workarounds seem technical and/or not relevant and rebooting a future busy session would be a real pain.

Thank you.

@hpjgross, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

error 0x800423f4 is a classic Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) issue, often tied to system protection or backup services failing. Since a reboot worked, it suggests the issue was temporary—maybe a conflict with another background process.

Possible Causes and Solutions:

VSS Writer Issues

Run vssadmin list writers in Command Prompt (Admin) to check if any writers are in an error state. If so, a restart often resets them, but it may indicate an underlying service conflict.

Conflicting Third-Party Software

Backup or security software can interfere with VSS. If you have any, try disabling them and retrying the restore point.

Corrupted System Files

Run SFC and DISM to repair any potential corruption:

  • sfc /scannow
  • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Restart after running these.

Check Disk for Errors

Run chkdsk /f /r on your system drive to ensure no SSD corruption.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
