HP Spectre x360 - 13t-ae000 CTO

I have not been able to back up my spectre x360 laptop for several months, I keep getting error 0x81000019. I have tried everything I could found online and finally just did a complete recovery, (cleared system of all programs and data and reinstalled a new windows) on the computer but I still get error. Is this repairable? Thought it was a software issue but after doing recovery, starting to think it is hardware related. ANY SUGGESTIONS? If I replace the hard drive and start with a fresh windows download will it fix the issue, or will I still have same issue?

Thank

Hi @psbloom,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Error code 0x81000019 typically indicates an issue with the Windows Backup and Restore feature. This error can occur for a variety of reasons, and it can be frustrating, but there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve it. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you fix the issue on your HP Spectre X360 - 13t.

Check Your Backup Drive: Ensure that the external drive or storage device you are using for backup is connected properly and has enough space to accommodate the backup.

Run Windows Backup Troubleshooter: Windows provides a built-in troubleshooter to identify and resolve issues with the Backup and Restore feature.

  • Press Win + I to open the Settings app.
  • Go to "Update & Security" > "Troubleshoot."
  • Under "Get up and running," select "Windows Backup" and run the troubleshooter.

Check for Windows Updates: Sometimes, Windows updates can fix compatibility issues and bugs. Make sure your operating system is up to date.

  • Go to "Settings" > "Update & Security" > "Windows Update."
  • Check for updates and install any pending updates.

Check Disk Space: Ensure that your system drive (usually the C: drive) has enough free space for temporary backup files. If it's running low, consider freeing up space by deleting unnecessary files or moving them to an external drive.

Disable Third-Party Backup Software: If you have third-party backup software installed, it might interfere with the built-in Windows Backup and Restore feature. Temporarily disable or uninstall any such software.

Reset Windows Backup Settings: Sometimes, the backup settings can get corrupted. You can try resetting the backup settings:

  • Open the Control Panel.
  • Go to "System and Security" > "Backup and Restore (Windows 7)."
  • Click on "Set up backup."
  • Follow the wizard to set up a new backup plan.

Check for Corrupted System Files: Corrupted system files can cause various errors. You can use the System File Checker tool to scan and repair system files:

  • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
  • Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  • Wait for the scan to complete and follow any on-screen instructions.

Check for VSS Service: Ensure that the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) is running and set to start automatically. To check this:

  • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  • Type services.msc and press Enter.
  • Locate "Volume Shadow Copy" and "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" services.
  • Ensure they are both set to "Automatic" and are running. If not, right-click and start them.

Create a New Backup Plan: If none of the above steps work, try creating a new backup plan from scratch.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
