Pavilion 15-f039wm
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
So about two weeks ago I booted up my laptop after having to force shut it down because it completely froze (which is nothing new; no matter how many time it updated, I always had this problem) to be presented with an error:
file:/BCD
Error: 0xc0000034
I've already searched the web and I can only find solutions that require me to perform a factory reset on the computer. That is not what I'm looking to do, and any information on how to fix this error and retrive my files WITHOUT wiping the data would be appreciated. Taking the laptop to a computer repair store is not an option because money is tight right now.

Hello;

Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!

That error code means that your BCD has become corrupted and needs to be rewritten.  To do this, you will need to create Boot Media using a working PC -- as there is no way to repair this on your current PC.

There are two different solutions for this, both of which are free and both of which work ...

1. Macrium Reflect

This is a free tool that can be used to image and restore PCs, but it also has an option to create Rescue Media (is disk or USN form) that can then be used to Repair your PC.

It is available from here:  http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

What I recommend is the following:
1) Download and install Macrium Reflect (MR)
2) Use the option to create a boot USB stick or CD
3) Boot your PC from the MR media and select the option to repair the Windows Boot

2. Neosmart's Easy Recovery Essentials

As far as I know, this is also Free -- and here is a link describing it:
https://neosmart.net/wiki/0xc0000034/

--------------------

Either of these should work to restore a working BCD to your PC.

Good Luck
