Hi,
I pretty much agree with you, that the best option may be just to reinstall the OS.
There are two options available - you may want to try the second one first.
1. You can order a replacement set of Recovery Media using the link below - this will reinstall the operating system, all required drivers and nearly all of the original software ( the exception often being trials of MS Office ). They will also re-create all the original partitions, including the Recovery Partition. The cost does vary depending on where you live, but they're generally inexpensive.
Order HP Recovery Discs.
2. Download the Windows 8 Image file ( I realise your machine shipped with 8.1, but this should work, but you will need to go through updating to Windows 8.1 ) on the following link - Note that this Image file is subject to a download cap, so you may need to try over a period of a few hours before the download starts successfully.
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0W9PBigPy94aVJWSndyTFNFMzg/edit?pli=1
You create a bootable Flash Drive for this Image using the free application below.

The product key for Windows 8 is encrypted in your bios chip and will be automatically read during installation.
Additional software and drivers you may require can be found Here.

Hi there,
Managed to get the restore done but cannot get any of the drivers?
"No software or drivers are available for this product with the selected operating system. Please make a different selection, or visit the product homepage."
Don't have recovery manager or anything installed anymore so cannot get the drivers etc back?
Cheers for all your replies!

Hi,
You're welcome.
This happens because your machine shipped with 8.1, so will have no specific drivers for 8
When you are on the page displaying 'No software or drivers are available for this product with the selected operating system. Please make a different selection', do you see an Edit option to the right - if you do, click this and select Windows 8.1 as the OS - most of the drivers should work for 8. As long as you have install the LAN or WLAN driver, just go through the Win 8 updates until the 8.1 upgrade is offered, apply this and then install the rest of the drivers.

I got the error Oxc0000225 after I did a repartitioning of the hard drive using a third party utility.
Since i did'nt had the recovery discs i was a bit woried about undergoing a fresh installatiuon
and therby losing genuine OS. Thanks for the post. Though I lost a whole lot of hours trying many
methods prior to reading this article, this one really helped.
