When starting up my laptop, it shows a blue screen containing the following information:

 

'Recovery. Your PC/Device needs to be repaired. The boot configuration data for your pc is missing or contains errors. You'll need to use recovery tools. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your pc administrator or pc/device manufacturer. 

 

Error code: 0xc000014c

 

What do I have to do in order to solve this problem and being able to start up my laptop?

Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome !

 

The issue is caused due to corrupted Boot Configuration Data (BCD). This may be caused due to incorrect BIOS settings, Windows error/faulty installation or virus/malware infection.

 

In order to fix it, first check the basic hardware to rule our hardware issue and then use System Restore.

 

 

Perform some basic hardware checks

 

1. Please, shutdown the computer using the power button

2. Power it on.

2.1 As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).

This should open a HP Startup Menu

 

3. Choose F2 to open System Diagnostics. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform System Test >> Quick test.

If there are no system checks/no quick tests, perform HDD and RAM check.

 

Let me know the test results. If the tests pass without issues, continue. If not, please, let me know

 

4. Repeat steps 1-2 above but when HP Startup menu opens, please choose F11 for System Recovery options.

The computer should boot from it's recovery partition to open you various recovery options. Note, that F11 option will only work if the recovery partition is there (not deleted) and intact. From there, you have prenty of options to choose from. Every HP computer comes with recovery partition present to assist in tough moments.

 

Please, perform "System Restore" first in an attempt to fix the issue. Please, restore back to previous days (restore point) where the issue was not present. Here is more info:

HP laptop Pavilion x360 states recovery tools needed (which I didn't do) and I did a systems quick diagnostic test which showed a failure ID QAPE30-87M8SE-GXGK7F-607D03.

 

Tried scanning the bar code, but couldn't fill in any info.

Did the hard drive extensive test and it states:  hard drive smart check passed.... hard drive short DST check: failed.

I apology for the delay in the reply time.

 

The error code you provided is probably incorrect (typo) because the tool does not accept it but the error description tells me that the hard disk drive (HDD) has failed.  Since this is faulty HDD/hardware component, you will probably not be able to recovery your files. If you want to attempt data recovery, please let me know and I may post additional instructions.

 

 

Here are your options on fixing the problem:

 

1) If your computer is still under warranty, please contact HP Support and inform them. They will work with you about the way to replace the faulty component.  Contact HP:

2) If your computer is with warranty period expired, you will need to replace the faulty HDD - buy new one on your own. There are variety of options - vendors you can choose from. You can get it online or from PC retail store, or from HP parts store http://partsurfer.hp.com/

 

 

You need HDD with the very same size as the current one or bigger (small will not work) - e.g. if your current HDD is with 500 GB capacity, your new HDD/SDD must also be 500 GB or with bigger capacity.  I recommend you consider HDDs with RPM 7200 as they as slightly faster, 5400 RPM is slower >> https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/r/rpm.htm

 

 

 

*** How to replace the faulty HDD with new HDD:  please, find info and instruction in your computer's manual or watch YouTube videos examples for your HP model.

If you do not want to do this on your own, please bring the computer (or ship it) to HP Authorized Service Center where the technicians will do this for you. If you are not sure where such a center is located, check these or contact HP for assistance in finding the nearest one for you:

3) Last part - once you replace the faulty component - you will need to reinstall back your operating system - Windows or another. So, as your computer originally came with Windows preinstalled by HP (a.k.a. OEM Windows), then you need to use HP recovery media - DVDs or USB pen drive you have previously created   or   recovery media purchased from HP.
