Recently downloaded a Microsoft update, have used since. Tried to watch a video and laptop crashed. Shutdown and tried to restart, message said laptop was auto repairing the 'disk' and this would take more than 1 hour. Left overnight. In the morning laptop had shutdown, when turned on blue screen appears saying:
'Recovery
PC needs to be repaired
Required device isn't connected or can't be accessed
Error code: 0xc0000185
You'll need to use recovery tools. If you don't have any installation media, contact your pC manufacturer
Press enter to try again
Press F1 to enter recovery environment
Press F8 for start up settings
Press Esc for UEFI firmware settings'
PC quickly turns off
Do not have the installation media
Any help would be appreciated go fix this issue, I only need access to remove a few word files and then will buy a new laptop so any advice on accessing them would be brilliant.
Many thanks,

Hi @Jonathanburt

Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting !

This is happening because Windows cannot start/boot .It may be caused due to simple Windows hung, hardware problem (e.g. your HDD) or it may be caused by the faulty Windows Update, some other faulty update/driver, corrupted bootloader / Boot Configuration Data in Windows etc....

1. Try hard restart/hard reset.

Press the power on-button on your PC and hold it for about 5-10 seconds until your computer powers off completely.

Remove and unplug any external periferals and accessories.

Press once the power-on button to turn on the PC and wait if it will start now. Wait...

If it still fails to load properly, go ahead with the next steps

2. Perform some basic hardware checks just to rule out hardware problem

- Please, shutdown the computer using the power button (pressed and hold for a few seconds until PC powers off)

- Power the computer back on.

As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap) before any logo appears. This should open a HP Startup Menu

- Choose F2 to open System Diagnostics. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform System Test >> Quick test.

This will check major hardware componets for issue (do it just in case) . Here is more info >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467259#AbT1

If there are no system checks/no quick tests, perform HDD (hard disk drive) and RAM check (memory check).

Let me know the test results. If the tests pass without issues, continue. If not, please, let me know

3. Repeat steps 1-2 above but when HP Startup menu opens, please choose F11 for System Recovery options.

The computer should boot from it's recovery partition to open you various recovery options. Note, that F11 option will only work if the recovery partition is there (not deleted) and intact. From there, you have prenty of options to choose from. Every HP computer comes with recovery partition present to assist in tough moments.

Please, perform System Restore first in an attempt to fix the issue. Please, restore back to previous days (restore point) where the issue was not present. Here is more info:

Hi @Sromaneck1

Thank you for posting in the HP Support Community.

Based on the error code provided I can see your PC model is HP Pavilion 10-k010nr x2 Detachable

It is two-in-one device with internal flash storage device - eMMC 32 GB.

Based on the error code, I can see it has failed, unfortunately.

Here is the service manual for your device >> http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04491166

There is no easy way for an end user to replace components on such devices. I would recommend you contact HP Support or HP authorized service center to see if and how they can help. Since the device warranty period has expired, note that a service fee may be required.

It always boots to a recovery screen, not a black one. I just don't have the recovery usb . Do you know how I can get it?

Hello,

You can purchase original HP Recovery media for your device model from this 3rd party reputable reseller >> http://www.computersurgeons.com/p-27677-windows-81-recovery-kit-814625-001-for-hp-pavilion-x2-model-...

It includes USB flash drive with the recovery image on it. Once you receive it, just plug it in, boot from it (F9) and proceed.

However, the test code you provided to me above points to hardware failure. Hardware failure means the eMMC drive which is the internal storage device has failed and should be replaced to use it.

Hi IT_WinSec,

after this laptop failed to led to work I had the hard drive recovered and wiped by a third party to retrieve my old files and bought a new laptop. I left the laptop with the third party to be destroyed. Why is this laptop back in use? Do I need to contact someone to have this stopped. @sromaneck1 if you have bought this laptop from a second hand dealer you have been sold a broken item.

Alternatively I understand this could be a different laptop with the same error code, if so then @sromanek1 the only thing I could do was have the hard drive recovered professionally and get a new one

Just to clear this up, this isn’t the model I had, sorry got worried my laptop had been resold, obviously hasn’t and @sromaneck1 is just expieriencing the same problem as me, best of luck getting it fixed
