OMEN by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-wd000 (7B9S2AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

My laptop freezes and reboots with a blue screen. First, the screen freezes, nothing can be done, the mouse doesn't move, the keyboard doesn't work. The cooling fans begin to hum, after which the computer reboots itself, or you have to force it to turn off with the power button.  The stop code is DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAIULRE. How can I fix it ?

Hi @RobertoMS, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE BSOD is usually caused by a driver issue, often related to power management. Here’s how you can fix it on your OMEN by HP 16.1-inch Gaming Laptop PC 16:

Check Windows Event Viewer

  1. Press Win + X → Select Event Viewer.
  2. Navigate to Windows Logs > System.
  3. Look for Critical or Error events around the time of the crash.
  4. Note any driver or service causing the failure.

Update Graphics and Chipset Drivers

Since this is a gaming laptop, GPU drivers are a common culprit.

A. Update Graphics Drivers

NVIDIA GPU (if applicable):

  • Download the latest Game Ready Driver from the NVIDIA website.
  • Use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to remove old drivers before installing the new one.

Intel Integrated Graphics (if applicable)

  • Get the latest drivers from Intel’s official site.

B. Update Chipset and Power Management Drivers

  1. Go to HP official support page for your laptop model.
  2. Download the latest chipset and power management drivers.
  3. Install and restart the laptop.

Disable Fast Startup

  1. Open Control PanelPower Options.
  2. Click Choose what the power buttons do.
  3. Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  4. Uncheck Turn on fast startup.
  5. Save changes and restart.

Adjust Power Plan & Sleep Settings

  1. Open Control PanelPower Options.
  2. Set Balanced or High Performance mode.
  3. Click Change plan settingsChange advanced power settings.
  4. Expand PCI Express > Link State Power Management → Set to Off.
  5. Expand Processor Power Management > Minimum processor state → Set to 100%.
  6. Expand USB Settings > USB selective suspend setting → Set to Disabled.
  7. Apply changes and restart.

Run System File Checker (SFC) & DISM

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  2. Run the following commands one by one:
    sfc /scannow
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Restart after the process completes.

Check for Windows Updates

  1. Open SettingsWindows Update.
  2. Click Check for updates.
  3. Install pending updates and restart.

Perform a Clean Boot

  1. Press Win + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. Go to the Services tab → Check Hide all Microsoft services.
  3. Click Disable all.
  4. Go to the Startup tab → Open Task Manager → Disable all unnecessary startup items.
  5. Restart the laptop.

Check for Faulty Drivers via Verifier

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  2. Type: verifier
  3. Select Create standard settings → Click Next.
  4. Choose Automatically select all drivers installed on this computer.
  5. Click Finish and restart.
  6. If a BSOD happens again, note the driver name and uninstall/update it.

Check RAM & SSD Health

  • Run Windows Memory Diagnostic (mdsched.exe) to test RAM.
  • Use CrystalDiskInfo or HP Hardware Diagnostics to check SSD health.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
