Good afternoon:I have an HP ZBook 15 G2 and when I boot it up, I get this warning: Warning - Machine is not in a committed state. How can I remove that message?

Hi @Antoniocarmona,

 

When you boot up your workstation, any error message that comes up is surely not what you’d expect. 

 

This warning "Warning - Machine is not in a committed state" on your HP ZBook 15 G2 typically indicates an issue with the System Management BIOS (SMBIOS) data, which includes critical product and security information like the serial number and product number. This often happens after a motherboard replacement, but it can occasionally be triggered by other events like a BIOS update or changes to boot settings.

 

There are 2 methods of fixing this. And they are:

 

1. Check and Re-enable Secure Boot

Sometimes, this message appears after disabling Secure Boot in the BIOS, often for tasks like imaging or dual-boot setups. Re-enabling it has resolved the issue in certain cases.

  • Access the BIOS Setup: Restart your laptop and press the required key (usually F10 or Esc then F10) repeatedly as soon as the HP logo appears to enter the BIOS setup.
  • Locate Secure Boot: Navigate to the Security or Boot settings (the exact path may vary slightly).
  • Enable Secure Boot: Check the status of Secure Boot and ensure it is set to Enabled.
  • Save and Exit: Save the changes and exit the BIOS. The system will restart.

 

2. BIOS Flash/Update (Less likely fix; rare scenarios)

In rare cases where the issue is believed to be caused by a corrupted BIOS or if other solutions fail, a clean BIOS flash might be attempted. However, be extremely cautious as a failed BIOS update can brick the system. Therefore, please try this at your own personal risk.

 

Lastly, if the warning is due to a recent motherboard replacement or if the first step doesn't work, is to contact HP Technical Support. This message is a sign that the critical product branding and security information (often called "branding" or SMBIOS data) was not properly programmed or "committed" to the new motherboard.
