Hi everyone. I've offered to help an elderly relative who has an extremely slow notebook. I'm no professional but I know my way around computers. He bought it second hand about a year ago but has hardly used it. Its painfully slow - there is a 5 or 6 second lag on the touchpad and keyboard, and every app takes at least 9 or 10 seconds to open. I've plugged in a USB mouse and that has exactly the same lag. As it was barely used he agreed for me to do a factory reset (which literally took all day), reinstalled Windows & updates but no change. I've used the HP support assistance to spend another day updating drivers & bios. But, again nothing has changed in regard to the excruciating slow speed. I don't know what else to do. Does this indicate a damaged hard drive perhaps? Or some other hardware issue? I know its an old machine but this is just not usable any more. Any advice is very welcome. Bios version F.49, 4GB RAM, 1000MHz processor, Win 10 64bit

It is 8 or 9years old now. It is one of the bottom end machines. It is also the slowest machine of the series. What more do you expect ? Two things you can do to get better speed
- Add same existing 4GB RAM to slot 2
- Replace its 500 GB 5400 rpm SATA with a 2.5" SATA SSD. You can use 500GB or 1TB or even 2TB of the following (or similar) drive https://www.samsung.com/au/memory-storage/sata-ssd/870-evo-1tb-sata-3-2-5-ssd-mz-77e1t0bw/
