Hi @Lap81,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. If you've inherited an HP 14 laptop and can't get past the Windows password because the previous owner has passed away, here are your options:

Option 1: If it's a Microsoft Account

  1. Go to another device and visit Recover your account
  2. Use the associated email address if known.
  3. If you don’t have access to the email/phone tied to the account, click “I don’t have any of these” during the reset process.
  4. You’ll need to answer account recovery questions or provide proof to Microsoft.

⚠️ If you can’t reset it or don’t know the account info, move to Option 2.

Option 2: Perform a Clean Installation (Factory Reset with Data Removal)

This will erase all data and accounts on the device, but let you reuse the laptop:

  1. Power off the laptop.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately press Esc repeatedly (once per second) until the Startup Menu appears.
  3. Press F11 to launch System Recovery / HP Recovery Manager.
  4. Choose "Troubleshoot" > "Reset this PC" > "Remove everything".
  • This will remove all user data and let you set up Windows as new.
  • You do not need a password if this option works.

If F11 doesn't work or recovery is not available, you can reinstall Windows manually using a bootable USB.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
