HP Notebook - 15-bw011dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've been prompted by Windows Update to install the latest version of Windows 10, 22H2 for months now. Despite being unable to find any of the "known issues" on my PC, I've been unable to complete this install. My knowledge of computers is less than moderate, unfortunately. If someone has any ideas as to how to get my PC to update, I greatly appreciate the help. I'm also open to a Windows 11 upgrade if it's available, just really tired of being prompted to complete an install that won't work.

Hi @MadBookworm,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It can be frustrating to deal with repeated failed attempts at updating your Windows 10, especially for the 22H2 version. Here are a few troubleshooting steps to help you get past the failed update.

Steps to Fix the Windows 10 Update 22H2 Failure.

Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  • Select Windows Update and click Run the troubleshooter. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Free Up Disk Space:

  • Sometimes, a lack of disk space can prevent updates from completing.
  • Go to Settings > System > Storage, and check if your C: drive has enough free space. You may want to delete temporary files or unused programs.

Disable Third-Party Antivirus Software:

  • Temporarily disable your third-party antivirus, as it might be blocking the update.

Use the Windows Update Assistant:

  • Download the Windows Update Assistant from Microsoft's website.
  • Run the tool, and it will help guide you through the update process. This might help if the regular update method isn't working.

Reset Windows Update Components:

  • Run a command to reset the Windows Update components, which might fix corruption issues.
  • Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following commands (press Enter after each):

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

  • After running these commands, restart your PC and try updating again.

Check for Driver Updates:

  • Sometimes, outdated drivers can cause issues with Windows updates. Go to Device Manager and check if any drivers have a yellow exclamation mark next to them. Update the drivers if necessary.

Use the Media Creation Tool:

  • You can try updating your PC using the Media Creation Tool:
    • Download it from here.
    • Choose the option to Upgrade this PC now.
  • This method can bypass issues with regular updates.

Upgrade to Windows 11 (if available):

Check Compatibility:

  • First, ensure your HP Notebook - 15 meets the system requirements for Windows 11. You can use the PC Health Check tool from Microsoft to check compatibility.

Upgrade to Windows 11:

  • If compatible, you’ll see an option to upgrade in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to upgrade.

Upgrade using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant:

  • Download the Windows 11 Installation Assistant from Microsoft’s website.
  • Run the assistant to start the upgrade process.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
